Hi Guys,

I'm getting an error shown below when trying to make a new project in Atmel Studio 7 - anybody know why?

Seems like a corrupted VS install, tried uninstall reinstall, uninstall all VS, VS cleaner, none fixed it.

Thanks,
Casey

Thanks js for your reply,

I can see why it would seem I was trying to open a picture, but this was happening when trying to start a new project at all...

For some reason I opened up Atmel Studio again after about 6 months - I did the exact same thing and it works now!

So problem solved by doing nothing - maybe it was a bug fixed in a windows, driver or other update.

Possibly somebody is poking pins into a computer shaped voodoo doll somewhere to help me... anyways magically fixed..

The clue is in the filename:

So problem solved

please mark the solution - see Tip #5 in my signature, below:

Top Tips:

  1. How to properly post source code - see: https://www.avrfreaks.net/comment... - also how to properly include images/pictures
  2. "Garbage" characters on a serial terminal are (almost?) invariably due to wrong baud rate - see: https://learn.sparkfun.com/tutorials/serial-communication
  3. Wrong baud rate is usually due to not running at the speed you thought; check by blinking a LED to see if you get the speed you expected

Yes problem went away on its own. Not possible for me to replicate problem to find out a solution.

Just to clarify, I wasn't trying to open a png or a project with any assets in it at all... this error appeared when I clicked on "New Project" in Atmel Studio home screen. I got the error before the dialog to select a project template appears.

I couldn't find "..\Images\" folder it was referring to. AS7 just gave me the OK box error before template selection dialog loaded, then would not open the template selection dialog. I assumed the missing file was part of VS/AS7. I'm not sure where that file "..\Images\Medium.png" would be other than the Atmel Studio program folder.

In my previous comment I described that the problem went away on it's own at some point - perhaps various updates outside AS7 fixed the resource.

I hope all this makes sense it seemed like a bad VS asset to me but I could be wrong.

Since I can only speculate the reason why the problem just went away, I'm not sure what solution to mark.

You've changed the thread title to 'FIXED' - so mark a post which explains why you consider it "fixed" - #3 or #5 ?

As noted in Tip #5, there's no need to edit the title - the forum will add its own "resolved" indicator.

Hello, I just encountered this same issue. I had AS 7 working, stopped using it for months, a few days ago I started it and tried to create a new project and got the same error. Then I tried updating to Microchip studio 7.0.2542, but the error is still here...

I'm using Windows 10 20H2, all updates done. Choosing new project yields this error: Failed to create a 'ImageSource' from the text '..\Images\Medium.png'. Tools -> Device Programming yields another: Provide value on 'System.Windows.Baml2006.TypeConverterMarkupExtension' threw an exception.

Tools -> Device Pack Manager seems to work.

Googling the error leads to old posts about VS 2013, .net updates for Win 8/8.1... I understand the current solution is waiting for 6 months, I hope at least this thread will show up on google and other will be able to find it. Has anyone managed to find something that fixes it in a shorter time?

That's what Atmel/Microchip Studio is based on - isn't it?

I think it is VS 2015 Shell, it is what you see when you install AS/M?S 7, you can also see it from the list of installed programs.

A recent .NET WPF update borked Microchip Studio; try rolling back to late March'21 or late Feb'21.

Patch Tuesday April'21 has come and isn't yet gone (the ones at Microsoft need a few weeks to correct defective updates)

P.S.

fyi, 2004 is in broad deployment.

Consider pausing or deferring Microsoft updates for a few weeks (Windows 10, .NET)

I'm using what I have... this thing just reboots and updates itself at the most inconvenient times.

How can I rollback just .net wpf? From what I understand, VS 2015 used .net 4.5, now Win 10 includes 4.8.something...

Acknowledged (unrolling a feature update is difficult)

fmiz wrote:

Windows 10 can be configured for either paused or deferred quality updates; feature updates can be delayed until a version EOS.

Such can be ceased in Windows 10 Enterprise.

One way is to create a restore point before proceeding with a Windows or .NET update.

I see, this is for future reference :D

I tried removing a few .net updates, KB4601050 (this actually has something about VS in the known issues) and KB4601554, and the latest Quality Update (April Patch Tuesday) KB5001330 but it did not do much (thanks for the links)

Thanks very much anyway gchapman.

I have bad news (at least for me).

I tried to reproduce the issue in a VM and failed. With both Win 10 20h2 build 19041.867 (march update) and build 19041.928 (april update), without any comulative update for .net 4.8, AS7 works fine (I can create a new project or open tools -> device programming).

.NET was inconsistent?  If yes then can repair.

Windows 10 was inconsistent by System File Checker (SFC)?  If yes then can repair though setup is more effective.

I think it is not inconsistent... it looks like the first .net repair tool does not find anything specific, it recommends only to "Reregister Windows Installer service" and "Restart Windows Installer service", both are "Applicable regardless of the diagnosis results."

I've let it do its thing and send logs to microsoft.

I've first tried to run a check, sfc /verifyonly and dism /online /cleanup-image /scanhealth, neither complained. Anyway, I've run sfc /scannow and dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth and rebooted just to be safe.

Unfortunately, this is not enough sad

Is that a rant against win 10 going on since... 2016?

The thread is a kitchen sinksmiley

The post is a more effective way to recover Windows 10.

That is a 5 year long kitchen sink, never seen something like that, I skimmed a few posts... I have no words to describe it surprise

I'll try the method you linked and report back as soon as I get to it, at least a backup is in order at this point. Also, I'd like to see if I can mirror my system to an hyper-v VM and test there.

Thanks very much for your advice gchapman

You're welcome.

No errors from SFC so no need to recover Windows (recover when Windows is wonky); meanwhile :

  • copy(s) of edition(s) of Windows 10 ISO
  • recovery drive

Concur on backup.

I found a solution, searching for the error 'System.Windows.Baml2006.TypeConverterMarkupExtension' I finally ended up here: https://www.realitymod.com/forum...

Open "Color Management" in windows, go to advanced, and set everything to default.

For some reason device profile was set to sRGB virtual device model (I'm translating, it may be not accurate), I restored it to default. This fixed AS7, I can now create a new project or open device programming. Everything seems to be fine.

This is tested with Win 10 20H2 build 19042.867 (march update) and AS 7.0.2389 (not the latest version).
