Does anyone know when the AVR Dragon is going to be available. I've tried the usual online sources but no luck yet.

If you search the other thread for Dragon at Digikey, you will see the estimates are sometime late this fall, Which means in practice the rest of us might be lucky to get one next February or March.

Too bad ATMEL does not have some sort of online store that could give the Freaks priority when ordering small quantities of tools and parts.

I agree, others do it, so why not Atmel?

Just an idea but does anyone round here speak/read Chinese? The fact is that the Dragon was initially targetted by Atmel at the Chinese market so it's possible they ARE available there and perhaps a www.google.cn might turn up a Chinese supplier who has stock?

I ordered one from Digikey about 6 weeks ago in anticipation. Just got notification yesterday that it shipped. Looks like they are already/still out of stock, though, as the website says a mid-October delivery...

I ordered several Dragons from All American in July and recieved them all this week (about 5 weeks) so they appear to be slowly appearing in the channel but you just have to place an order wtih some distributor and see what happens regardless of what the current stock may indicate. :D

Aye, Here Be Dragons!

I ordered one from All American about a month ago, and it just showed up a few hours ago. Love the box.
So it does look like they are starting to trickle into the disto chain.
Like bluegoo suggests, I'd just backorder from one of the bigger outfits and start waiting.

hi,

please go easy on a noob. I am just getting into microcontrollers and basically, well.... i know nothing.

I picked up an stk500 and an avr dragon to play with, but am totally lost as to how to start.

Can someone point me towards a good book or resource for a 100% absolute noobian?

See the sticky thread above. Anyway, which language? If Asm then see www.avrbeginners.net and for using the STK500 or Dragon one of the best resources is actually the help system in AVR Studio

Digikey showed 4 in stock this morning, I ordered 1. Now @ 6pm there are 0 in stock. I was seriously tempted to horde a few of these units.

I am a bit sad though; I was not anticipating that dragon would be available so early as last month I purchased a Mk2.

Oh well, Digikey is great with shipping so hopefully I will get it tommorow.

I am more excited about seeing the box than getting the dragon since I already have all the functionality of the dragon and then some with the MK2. It will be nice to be even more carefree with my work since frying a $60 ICE is small potatos WRT to frying the $300 Mk2.

How does your MK2 do HVP then?

I have an STK500 too, I never realized the dragon did HV programming.

Oh yes, have a glance through the AVR Studio help section on the Dragon to find out what it can do. It's like a mini-STK500 + mini-JTAGICEmkII

I realized that I missed the first shipment of Digikey's Dragons so I placed a Dragon on backorder at Digikey and I got it shipped four days later. Thus I would recommend putting a Dragon on backorder for one self as I assume that puts you in the priority cue when the shipments come in as opposed to trying to catch one online when they are in stock.

Got my dragon Today. Much smaller than I expected, nothing came with it; just the board and the box.

Tried it out to debug a Atmega88 and it works. Wiring is all over the place though.

I am gonna put a zif socket in there tommorow and try out the HVprogramming.

I can definitely see that in the next few months the dragon will take over the STK500 as the must get development tool.

Kudos to Atmel.

Well, finally I ordered a dragon from the local distributor, Soanar here in Australia, should be here tomorrow so looking forward to checking it out. Anyone else interested in buying one from Australia they should have 7 left. Goto www.soanarplus.com.au.
