Guys I'm working on a dns server but when I transmit the DNS reuest using UDP wire shark neer shows it has a dns request but that it's a simple UDP transaction.  Where may I be going wrong?  how in the hell does wireshark know the difference???

This topic has a solution.

Are you sending the packet to port 53?  That's the default DNS port.

Could also be that the format of your packet isn't quite right so wire

shark thinks it's not actually DNS.

Source port is arbitrary, the DNS responder will

reply back to it.  If there are many 'sockets' open

the source IP and port and destination IP and port

are used to determine which one should receive

the packet.
