Does anyone the max allowed current through the clamping diodes of the ATmega8 (or any other AVR)?

The datasheet knows it!

Look at: absolute maximum ratings

I did not find a special value in the datasheet, so I would
assume that the maximum dc current for i/o pins (40 mA)
should be regarded, but I'm not sure.

This subject has come up before. But I think there are no specs given. You are best off not trying to use the diode for anything above a milliamp. If you are looking at transient suppresion from unknown sources then fit 'proper' devices.
Edit
Do not mix up output current handling and protection.

Keep it simple it will not bite as hard
