I am having a problem an AVRISP mkII reading the device signature of an ATmega88 in Atmel Studio 6.2.  When I try to read I get this error

I have:

  • Checked both LEDs on the programmer and they are both green
  • It will read the target voltage in Atmel Studio
  • Verified my ISP connections are correct

                     1-MISO   2-VCC

                     3-SCK     4-MOSI

                     5-RESET  6-GND

  • Verified continuity from the internal connector of the programmer to the corresponding pins on the microcontroller
  • Uninstalled the drivers and reinstalled
  • Installed the latest version of Atmel Studio
  • Verified the programmer pulls the Reset low when attempting to read.  (10k pull up resistor installed)
  • Verified there is a clock signal on SCK during the attempt to read
  • Checked the interface clock is set to 2.152 kHz in Atmel Studio
  • Tried a new ATmega168 (the ATmega88 was new as well)
  • Tried to read from an Arduino Leonardo board

I have done multiple searches and have been unable find an answer.  If anyone has anything that I have missed I would greatly appreciate the help.

Checked the interface clock is set to 2.152 kHz in Atmel Studio

The very low ISP frequency will not help, if a new chip doesn't works at 250KHz (I use 125KHz for safety) then a very low ISP frequency will not make it better.

In fact a lot of chips CANNOT be programmer below 6KHz or something close.

Are you looking at the ISP pinout from the TOP of the board?

I had already tried 125 kHz and 250 kHz. My connections are correct.  I tried another programmer and was able to flash the microcontroller this morning.  It looks like for some reason the AVRISP mkII is bad.  Thank you for your reply.

Sometimes the tiny wires in the ribbon cable break after some time and flexing, when that happens, pry the connector apart, move it down the cable about 1/4 inch or ~7mm and compress it back together, cut the excess cable off and try using it again.

If it still does not work, repeat the above on the other end of the cable.
