AVR231 – AES bootloader and copyright issue

Hi,
I would like to ask about some copyright concerns. Atmel released Application Note AVR231 "“ AES Bootloader with attached code for IAR compiler. Files are copyrighted, but I can't find any license. Can somebody tell me if I can freely use and modify this software? I want to port it to gcc, modify a little bit, and use in a book as example "“ of course with original Atmel copyright. Am I allowed to do this?

chances are the license is free to use/modify. However, as you are publishing it in a book, you will need express written consent to use it.
