Hi,

I'm just thinking about buying a USB AVR programmer. Can anyone tell me if the 5V from the USB is connected to the 5V on the ISP header, in other words can power for the target be provided from the USB port?

The serial one works the other way. The programmer is powered by the project.

Hi,

USB specifications say that you can power the target hardware using the 5V on the USB bus. You can draw 500ma from the PC USB port or a powered USB hub. The unpowered hub provides about 100ma to the target.

Your best bet is to purchase the DLP-USB232M from either mouser.com or dlpdesign.com. Once you get this, you can make a small board and wire up your AVRISP to the ttl level outputs directly to the board skipping the max232 or other rs232 <> ttl converter.

You would then be portable without need for additional power and WinXP supports the unit without need for driver from the outside.
