While performing a web search, I stumbled across a page I saw years ago. The page was recently updated ( 7/17/08 ) and is requesting email for additional thoughts on its subject: PIC vs. AVR. I sent an email with additional details regarding a few points on the comparison and thought other members here might have other insights to pass along to the author.

I did PICs way back. The newest top of the line PICs may no longer have the inexcusable lack of a hardware stack nor the absurd memory paging (tiny page sizes).

The question now, I say, is AVR (like the ATmega1284) versus ARM7, since the prices for the latter are so low now, and in the THUMB mode the code size is viable. The ARM7s are more difficult for a microprocessor novice - more complex. For real beginners or for Robotics guys, ZBasic.net is ideal (AVR based).

There's a great free GCC for ARM7 as there is for AVRs.
