Hi

The data sheet suggest that a the edge of the PCB should be surrounded by holes through the board to prevent parasitic radiation which leads to the antenna pattern being distorted. How important is this? Also they are suggesting a PCB of a certain width. How much difference will that make?

Depends on how important antenna performance is. Datasheet suggests all this for a reason and if you want maximum efficiency, then stick with what DS says. But almost any antenna design will work, not as good, but will.

Just by the way this was for the PCB that you mounted the module onto - which means the antenna is already sorted out on module PCB

Yep. Antenna on the module is designed to work in conjunction with the PCB it is mounted on. I don't really understand this HF RF stuff, but I've seen that antenna performance suffer a lot if module is not placed on the PCB.
