Is it possible to access directly the ATMega32U4 on the Xplained nano board? I have a project to use this chip for some USB activity. I'd like to program it and test how it responds over USB. Is this possible? I realize I won't be able to use the 416 while it is executing my code. Is the firmware for the normal operation available somewhere so I can make it back to normal?

Any tips are appreciated

Should be with your preferred version of Atmel Studio 7.

Another source though may be an older mEDBG :

similar though for different AVR :

Why not just read out and backup the device content before you start?

(Remember you will need to restore the app + bootloader + eeprom + fuses)
