atmel's 16 bit micros

is there an atmel 16 bit microcontrollers? can someone give me an example? i have knowledge in C using imagecraft C for AVR, so probably i'll program using C. what compiler should I use?

Atmel have a range of 32 bit microcontrollers based on the ARM cpu. Imagecraft have a compiler for these (AT91 and SAM7 series) as well as gcc and many others. In fact for the ARM you'll find more tools than for the AVR.

The Texas MSP430 is 16 bit. What is the Hitachi H8 series? I have a feeling that may be 16 bit
Also ref the ARM; when used in thumb mode it uses16 bit values rather than 32 bit.

Keep it simple it will not bite as hard

AMD's AM188ER and AM186ER.

3.3v, up to 50 Mhz, 32k ram on chip, timers, ports, interrupt controller, uart,
8086 instruction set, 1 meg address bus, etc. 100 pin PQFP or TQFP, almost
a "pc-xt" on a chip. Down side, no on-chip flash memory or brownout, but
still made a pretty tidy solution for me in a portable instrument using
a graphic panel that required a cpu "bus hold" input. I would like to
migrate this design to an Avr, but I have not yet come up with a good
way to implement a bus hold without costing several cpu cycles, thus
losing any speed/power advantage the Avr would have had.

You may also want to look at the Renesas M16C family. They are 16 bit but also cover some of the 8 bit and 32 bit procesor range. They are very feature rich and are peripheral and pin compatible across the whole family. The tools are quite inexpensive, allow in circuit program and debug, and parts are available from a number of sources.

I've already searched the TI website. i like the MSP430F448 chip.

i'll just set some bits and it goes to 16 bit mode? what's the downside when using in thumb mode? will this affect the compiler/RTOS? we have an avaliable Nucleus RTOS. Is this possible for the ARM thumb in 16bit?
