Hi guys,

After I run Atmel Studio (both 6 or the newest 6.1) the program starts, the screen looks OK. Then, after a few seconds the program freezes. After that I get a Windows report that the program stopped working.

I am running Windows 8 Pro, on an X64 system. I've tried everything I could think of, installed, reinstalled and even gone back to an older version, but nothing helped.

I've searched the net, tried some fixes for various versions, but nothing.

Please advise.

Thank you,

David

It should be noted that it worked until recently.

With the ugly Win8? :-)
Do you happen to be using USB>RS232 adaptors on your system? AS was crashing (still crashes) with a Prolific adaptor and a terminal program for me.

In defense of studio; most programs using .net4 or newer can crash when using Prolific... I'm not saying, but just observing...

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I'm kind of desperate.

edit: I just learned that another release has been released today, I'll try that.

If it crashes, you should have the option to get a detailed report of the crash or even better send the error report (yes they do actually get to us eventually).

Also check the event log for things that may have been logged in the crash. Even also, what sort of exception box? JIT Debug or just the normal Windows oooops box?

Ouch... Kernelbase :P

Try opening a command line in the studio install dir and invoke studio with atmelstudio.exe /SafeMode

If that does not work, I need to know if this only happens with 1 project or generally (e.g does it freeze if you open studio by opening a project/solution, or if the crash occurs just by launching studio and letting it stand idle at the start page.

If it crashes on a certain project, the I propose to trash the project files and recreate them. The problem would most probably stem from some stray character somewhere in the project files that chokes the parsers.

If it happens when ideling, then the problem is a bit more iffy. Probably some strong signed dll somewhere on your system that should have been updated but is locked and therefore is not in the correct version. Usually to solve this I would make you uninstall all applicable programs below (note that other things might get nuked in the process, so backups of projects etc might be usefull):

  • Atmel Studio, all version
  • Visual Studio, Normal and Express versions
  • MSSQL
  • All references to Visual Studio/Isolated Shell etc
  • All references to .net4 or greater
  • Clean registry node at HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Atmel\AtmelStudio\6.0
  • Clean registry node at HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Atmel\AtmelStudio\6.0_Config

Phew. Beware that the registry nodes I mention is from memory, so they may be somewhere else :P

Then, download the newly released 6.1 Full installer (yes, the big one) and install.

I'm having the same problem!

Recently I uninstalled Atmel Studio 6, and then installed Atmel Studio 6.1. Anytime I open Studio, the program will eventually get to the start page, then freeze. It will then proceed to go into the "not responding" state, and then freeze my computer. I uninstalled and reinstalled a few times, and still the same result.

Just reverted back to 6.0, and no freezing.
