I think this is new. I couldn't find it when I searched AvrFreaks.
The registration fee is $100, which includes an ATEVK1101 ($79 value) development board, JTAGICE mkII emulator ($299 value), free software and lunch.
I think I would go just for the free lunch ;-)
oh count me in for Atlanta
Wow, impressing! For us in Sweden they only had a lottery for some of that stuff. I won just after the JTAG went. We didnt have to pay for the seminar thou.
I hardly call $100.00 a free lunch, but to each his own. It's Cleveland for me.

$100 = $lunch + $JTAGmkII + $EVK1101
$lunch = $100 - $299 - $79;
you are right, they are paying us to eat lunch!
Yeah that's the hook, spend money but think of the money you're saving. You forgot to add travel time and expense not to mention the opportunity cost of your time.
Expenses Drive Time 3 hrs ( 375.00) Hotel for 1 night ( 70.00) Seminar 8 hrs ( 1000.00) Drive Time 3 hrs ( 375.00) Meals (1B & 2D) ( 60.00) Gas (360 mi RT) ( 40.00) Seminar Fee ( 100.00) -------------------------------------- Total ( 2020.00) Goodies JTAG box 299.00 EVK1101 79.00 "free" lunch 18.00 -------------------------------------- Total 396.00 Net gain(loss) ( 1624.00)
If that is your idea of a free lunch I think I should hold onto my wallet in your presence. :D
Ahhhh....cha...cha...cha
haha, looks more like this to me!
Expenses Drive Time .5 hrs ( 62.50) Seminar 8 hrs ( 1000.00) Knowledge Gained (-1000.00) Drive Time .5 hrs ( 62.50) Gas (50 mi RT) ( 5.56) Seminar Fee ( 100.00) -------------------------------------- Total ( 230.56) Goodies JTAG box 299.00 EVK1101 79.00 "free" lunch 18.00 -------------------------------------- Total 396.00 Net gain 165.44
3 points bother me:
1) wish i got $125/hour
2) pay attention at seminar so you learn something :P
3) cost of estimating expenses must have been over $50 haha
If it's not cost effective for you, just don't go. I miss shows in San Fran all the time, but that doesn't mean they are bad deals.
I didn't mean to start a flame war and I'm sorry your time is not as valuable as you would like it to be. Depending on any set of assumptions you care to make with intangible assets you can achieve any desired result from net gain to net loss to break even. Now you may appreciate why financial statements with a line item for "goodwill" can be so easily manipulated.
I never said I was unhappy with the opportunity to gain information or the cost of a one day boondogle, just with the proposition that there is a "free" lunch. From Atmel's point of view they can make the same kind of cost benefit analysis based on "captive eyball hours".
Have you noticed that on the webpage in many cities the venue is listed as TBD. It was that way for Cleveland until I signed up and suddenly it became determined. So I conclude that each location needs a minimum of three people to make it worthwile for them to put the show on.

The seminar does not now, nor ever did require a defense. To those of us with a need for face time with an expert it is invaluable. I certainly aggree that the value of my time and the level of my compensation are uncorrelated, I had to pick a number and it seemed like a convenient one. I've been paid more as an expert witness, but not on a regular basis. It certainly is soft duty if you can get it.
This looks quite tempting! I have a JTAGICE mkII from an Atmel seminar I went to a couple years ago. They were supposed to just be giving out the JTAGICE, but they ran out and I got a JTAGICE mkII instead!
Although, I am not sure I can justify taking the day off work with how busy I have been lately...
I wish they would do that on the embedded-world... Going from Brazil to Germany to attend.
