They're said to come in Q1/08 and Q4/07.

Interesting. Where did you see the mention? Could these be some of the first long-awaited Xmega models?

They're Smart Battery AVRs. That timing sounds about right, but I can look into more specifics if you need me to. These devices are already supported in the latest WinAVR, 20070525.

Ok, now that you mentioned "Smart Battery" a quick search (which found nothing for the device names) brings up some "white papers", one of them stating (for the '406 device):
"High Voltage I/O
For battery monitoring and management devices several high voltage inputs and outputs are needed:
- Input to voltage regulator. This input provides power to the device drawn directly from the battery, in the range of 4-25V.
- Input to Voltage ADC for individual cell voltage measurements Input to detect the presence of a battery charger
- Outputs to charge, discharge, and pre-charge FETs

Atmel’s high voltage technology makes it possible to integrate Flash program memory and logic as well as accurate analog circuitry on the same die as high-voltage tolerant I/O."

Now the "HV" makes sense..

...what I've heard about the X-es is that they won't be there before 2008.

;) Take care. I'm really anxious to get my hands on some Xmegas ('88 class to start, maybe, if offered) and a datasheet. I rarely run out of gas with an AVR, but that also means I just don't tackle jobs that cannot be handled. Just the DMA and high-speed conversion will be a boon to some apps. And some extra processing punch would help to chew and swallow the gathered data--filters & such.

Let me re-phrase the query in another way: If an Atmel AVR customer (like many of us here) feels that they need to be on the forefront of the Xmega frontier, would it do any good at this point to go through normal rep-disti-district channels with non-disclosures and such? Or might it be so far off still that only selected major users are being included, so normal channels would just be a waste of time?
