Hi!
I recently have bought an Atmega 328PB Xplained mini and tried to program it with Microchip Studio 7.0.2542. I got an error message  "Unable to connect to tool mEDBG (ATML252305270000732)"

Timestamp:    2021-12-23 22:32:05.734
Severity:        ERROR
ComponentId:    20000
StatusCode:    0

Failed to set-up tool (no context id returned).

It is weird for me because the serial number was not read properly.
There is no such situation explained in Xplaind user guide):
ATmega328PB Xplained Mini (microchip.com)

I found exactly the question with the proper answer for it, unfortunately, the script which should solve the problem is not attached there.
Unable to connect ATmega328P Xplained Mini (force.com)

In addition, I tried MPLAB X IDE and the debug mode worked however mEDBG was not the same as on my bord info ATML252305270000732 instead  ATML2523052700007329

I have no idea where the serial number is located in my board memory or how to manually change it in microchip studio.
any help appreciated.

This topic has a solution.

Look at the product label on the reverse of the pcb.  e.g.

ATML252305270000732

A00-2523/05 SN2700007329

The Serial Number is in the EEPROM of the mEDBG chip.    The last character should be an ASCII digit.

You need to mount a 5x2 header to read the EEPROM.

I contacted a distributor and they finally sent me a script that solves the issue. If someone is interested, I put the attachment below. In my case everything I needed was:
1) Open microchip studio
2) plug in board
3) run file set_serial.exe from unzipped folder
4) enjoy!
