I am making this post because I feel that this information is not easily available. The ATmega328p-au is one of the most popular microcontrollers out there, and with these recent supply chain shortages, purchasing them has become extremely difficult.

 

I have noticed many of these "ATMEGA328p U-KR" chips and were totally miffed by what they were. I would go to purchase atmega328p-au's and when I asked for a picture I received pictures of chips labeled as "U-KR" or "U-TH". Finally, after hours of digging, a man on Alibaba has saved me. Apparently, these chips are the EXACT SAME as the ATMEGA328p-au; 0 differences except that they have a "new silkscreen". The "U-KR" part is just the location it was made, ie Korea (KR) or Thailand (TH). So for anyone worrying about not being able to use these chips because they aren't "P-AU" chips, don't worry, they are!

 

This is dumb I know, but now I know and so does everyone who is reading this. Also sorry if this is redundant, but I literally can't find this information anywhere else.

Have you looked at the PDFs where Microchip explain their chip markings/labelling scheme? I'm pretty sure I've read something about a two letter placeholder for manufacturing location.

I actually have been looking off and on, and I cannot find anything about C.O.P markings.....not saying you're wrong Cliff.

Tell that to the countless souls who have poured their woes out here regarding chips that they bought off Ebay and Alibaba/Aliexpress after being told that they were the real deal, only to find out tht the only thing real about them was that the parts were defects culled from production runs, or just totally defective.

Order what you need from both sources and keep the ones that work, sell the others on EBay for twice their cost!

Ahh!  So is Alibaba where you saw so many of these devices?  If so, I would seriously doubt that they are trustworthy, meaning, I would not be too confident in putting them in production designs.

About the Quality of the devices, yes.  I was not pooh-poohing your information on the markings, I myself wanted to confirm the authenticity as we have had posts in the past of some dubious device markings.

 

Any chance you could post a picture of some of these chips with those markings?  Be great to match them to Cliffs Notes and see how they compare.

I think it's better not to make a big order at the beginning. You can make a small order of both variants and see how everything goes.

The question is whether they're genuine.  I have a UNO clone purchased 6 months ago.

It came with a 'KR' labelled chip:

 

MEGA328P U-KR

354ABP

2108A3H

 

(as best as I can read it with a magnifier)

 

354ABP was suspicious as 328P chips usually quote 35473D (but notice the similarity).

D is the 328P's revision number and there have been none newer AFAIK.

 

What clinched it for me as being a fake was the signature row:

I remember that I have seen info like what in #11.

It was a change note from either atmel or microchip, but I cant find it now
