While browsing Ali Express I stumbled on a board which is sold as being an "arduino nano" but with a chip marked as

WAVGAT
AVGA328P
AU 1738

"AU 1738" is a bit of a guess because of the limit of resolution from the picture.

I am somewhat curious to the legality and what other AVRfreaks think about these boards, but I have no real interest in trying to shave another 10ct of already redicilous cheap boards.

I found them on:

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/WAVGAT-Pro-Mini-ATMEGA328P-328-Mini-ATMEGA328-5V-16MHz-for-arduino-Nano-Microcontrol-Micro-Control-Board/32954774902.html

Those 10ct are pretty much irrelevant to me. I find it more annoying that I have to take care to avoid such stuff because I have no intenion on spending time to investigate if these boards will even work (they probably do) or much worse: have some slight incompatibilities that may cost a week in debugging time.

There is also a clone of the ST32F103C0T6, which starts with type number GD32.

Yeah; the LogicGreen LGT8F328 - it's been discussed before here, back as far as 2013, apparently.

It's sold in somewhat more honest form as "Wemos XI" - honest in the sense that the board is clearly identified as not having a real AVR.  A couple of Arduino folk have been unpleasantly surprised by incompatibilities of the WAVGat boards.  (relatively minor things like "signature doesn't match a real 328p, so you need a new "board" definition.  Not major bugs, AFAIK.)
