The ATmega1284P was the first.
Now the new ATmega1284 was available.
But it seems, there is a big difference, it lost one timer. :!:

On the data sheet, there was a very hidden remark on page 62:
"3. Applies only to Atmel ATmega1284P"

Has anybody already used the ATmega1284 ?

Was the timer 3 rejected really :?:

I found no migration note on the Atmel web.

Lol--I think that has been brought up before. IIRC there were conflicting XML files and other uncertainties.

This is the thread I remember, but no answer to your question:

Note that >>you<< participated in this one:

Let us know what the real answer is. ;)

You can put lipstick on a pig, but it is still a pig.

I've never met a pig I didn't like, as long as you have some salt and pepper.

In the .xml in the devices dir in studio6 I get

$  grep TIMER3 ATmega1284.xml

which is the same as in ATmega1284P.xml.

I am not going to take part in the discussion about this chip, because I was named a "troll" last time I cited Atmel's datash..t.
Here it is:

Answer from Atmel:

"Timer 3 exists in both ATmega1284 and ATmega1284P. It is not available in ATmega164/324/644 devices."

Thanks for the update, danni.

Given when it was introduced, this bit-pusher has at least a suspicion that the '1284 was purpose-built for the Raven. It needed a lot of SRAM, apparently, and maybe needed another timer as well? (I've never played Raven games)
