From searching their data sheet,
I gather that the difference between an AT90USB1286
and an AT901287 is that the former is device-only.
Did I miss anything?

Nope, but the 1287 is not exactly a true host either. It supports a subset of host called "On The Go" (aka OTG).

Thanks.
Now I know how to "port" device code from a 1287 to a 1286.
