What's arduino?
Never touch the stuff myself...
I was wondering already....
I hope the guy who was smart enough to register the name wins, I know its all very judgemental of me and I could be way way off but when I look at that Banzi guy I think he looks like a bit of a bully, Gianluca looks like a mouse, if they were all friends then something made Gianluca register the name on the sly and it must of been pretty major, there is more to the story
I think gianluca is the smart one and if he regisrtered it first then surely its his?, Banzi and Cuartielles are crapping them selves, I just don't like either of them for reasons I don't know, I think both of them need to have a shave in order to present a clean image, the beards just look stupid
All sweeping generalisations and massive assumptions at this end I am aware of this its like a soap opera
What's arduino?
It's a product for "electronics challenged" people .
It's a product for "electronics challenged" people
I like that, it makes me smile then I feel like I am being arrogant but I suppose it took a lot of work to be not so challeged
The Arduino is just too dumbed down for me and you hear the people raving about the community when the reality is the community is a bit toxic and the unfriendliness to n00bs is what puts me off posting on there.
This place is far more friendly and the level of knowledge is really unique, yeah I do like AVR Freaks a lot its just a little quieter than the Arduino Forum
Now correct me if I am wrong here because I am relatively new to this site but am I right that just in recent times this site has become more busy? thats how it feels to me like in the last year
It's a product for "electronics challenged" people .
Thank you, that answers my question, I thought I had missed something....

Yep - posting as an outsider

Almost spit the tea out when I read that.

On the arduino forums, if you ask a deep technical question, they start criticizing your coding style, the formatting of your post (because you didn't read the "how to use this forum" sticky), and other things about your post that had nothing to do with your question.
Here, you'll mostly get flamed for not having read the datasheet (which at least IS a route to the answer.)
I think the arduino forums are currently without anyone quite as saintly as Cliff... :-)

Theres no one even close, I hate to criticise an entire community but they are quite toxic. It feels to me like theres lots of people with a tiny bit of knowledge (Ohms law!) and they use it to flex their ego's, there must be plenty of other people put off by this
To be fair I don't know of any other site with a moderator like Cliff, its a lot to ask
jgm
This is one of the best if not the best electronics forum on the net, the knowledge here is impressive and its very friendly
Someguy's picture is really amusing, it made me smile yesterday and I am grinning ear to ear now, class

Edging up to 300 posts now, look out Cliff, the gap is narrowing
Almost spit the tea
hmmm it looks like something a bit stronger than tea.....
But seriously I don't see that my posts here are really any different to the other 20+ top posters - it's just I have a bigger gob! (or worse case of verbal diahrea)

Well, exactly. I mean, I like to think that my posts are generally pretty good, but I'll often ignore questions that I find particularly clueless, lacking in sufficient explanation, or that have been answered many times before, have tutorials, and are about things that are clearly documented. And then I see that you've helped anyway. Saintly, I say (and exactly as per Mandela)!
I can confirm the mod(us) opera ndi of the arduino forum. having had exactly the same experience as westfw!
I can't be bothered to go back after my ban expires - my monika 'simplystupid' haha. Ran several electronics manufacturing outfits, but I can't program, but so what.
I look forward to being banned here as well for asking deep, meaningful, technical questions.
Great forum - AVRFreaks.
Almost spit the tea out when I read that.

Me too. I have only been here a couple more years than Bignoob, but I remember the moderators having to discipline the old timers for being rude and jumping down the throats of people posting sort of dumb questions. This used to be a much harsher place than it is now. I sort of miss it. Now it is so civilized.
And yes, Cliff is about as nice as a person can be. Plus, he has 2 cats.

If there were only one reason for me to hang around here (and there are, actually, a few more), it would be Cliff. Always quick to give credit to others (I'm always gratified when I see my name mentioned in his posts). I consider his contributions here to be one of the standards against which I measure my own.
I've never used an Arduino "properly"(although I did download the "IDE" the other day, out of curiosity), but I have, I believe, benefitted from the movement, in that I can buy really cheap PCBs containing AVRs(or MEMS devices etc.), which I have used in a fair few prototyping exercises.
Can't speak about any forums or communities, however, as I have no experience of them.
I like the "electronically challenged" description.
Although, I must admit, I bought some Chinese Arduino Nano clones that are 1.6" x 0.7", have a 32 pin ATmega328P, a 16 MHz crystal/ceramic oscillator, a CH340G USB chip and mini USB connector, a reset button that is not terminated correctly, and a 6 pin ISP header, all for $2.55. I used to make my own, and the ATmega cost me more than that. It would take me a whole day, or more, to solder it up on a proto board because I was too cheap to spin a board. I don't use the Arduino IDE or libraries, since C is my second language and I like Atmel Studio, but the little boards are just too easy for me to pass up on.
Which is the whole downside of the movement for someone like me who is trying to learn electronics. Just about any little project I would have had to build myself, and learn from 5 years ago, is now available as a shield. I guess I shouldn't complain about it. If I build my own, which I try to do, and it doesn't work, I can always just buy one, usually for a ridiculously low price. Although, I still make my own RFID detectors for less than I have seen them anywhere.
I hope Cliff doesn't get so self conscious from us telling him how much we like him that he stops posting. I would like to see him with a big blush on his face, I must admit.
Mark there is simply no replacement for experience and I find this site is far more relevant to real world electronics as opposed to just hobbyist stuff
The attitudes on the Arduino forum is really bad and its as if its a culture over there where by if you have a certain post count then you can be as arrogant as you like with nothing said
Building your own boards is what you need to do as you just get better at it those shields are all well and good to test something or have fun fast but if you are involved in commercial electronics development you realise that its quite different to the hobbyist stuff, theres so much more needed than those schematics show
I have learnt this the hard way, and I am learning every day, the world of engineering is really complicated and to contrast safety critical engineering with hobbyist engineering and its a different world all together there is a lot of stuff inbetween
Cliff deserves an award and also IMO kartman should be a moderator here there is simply no excuse. kartman is the hardware version of cliff!
I am just a hobbyist. I did software algorithms for almost 40 years, and somebody else did the hardware. Now I wish I had been an experimentalist instead of a theorist in graduate school. I would have had all those years to figure this stuff out. Now I'm old and retired and still learning basics. It's OK. It keeps me out of the bars. I always am a little intimidated by how much people like Cliff and Kartman know. They always have answers for me and when I display my ignorance trying to contribute nobody gets in my face too much. I usually just ask questions. I understand the difference between commercial electronics and hobby stuff. There are lots more considerations for a board that is going into production than something I am building just to see if I can do it. I have a friend who has been doing electronics for about as long as I did software, and he tells me I am at about where he was in 8th grade. That is sooo good for my ego.
Keep on keepin' on. Good luck with your career.
Even though I haven't had a solution from you guys to my UDA1330 DAC issue, at least I don't get this kind of Arduino.cc forum sarcasm - note also how I get 'locked out' with a phoney 5 minute message so CAN'T REPLY!
Yeah, the Arduino forums have some very prolific posters that aren't very ... tolerant of perceived "bad questions."
OTOH, the Arduino forums get a lot more bad questions...
The Arduino is just too dumbed down for me and you hear the people raving about the community when the reality is the community is a bit toxic and the unfriendliness to n00bs is what puts me off posting on there.

I seen this one and just had to say ++++more than 1
I started off with Arduino and that "got me going", then shortly afterwards started with AVR & C. All I can say about the Arduino forum is there are helpful people but also there are definitely a significant number of a#*holes. I can only guess those ones are wannabes but the sugar coated Arduino is all they can handle. So they gain their "status" by attacking noobs.
Being more of a beginner, I use a C coding layout that makes it very easy for me to see at a glance what the code is doing. I googled it and it is a known way of laying out C and even has a name. Plus I've seen it recommended in one or two C books that beginners should use that layout. Some pratt on the Arduino forum said my coding style was horrible so I attacked back and gave him 3 times as much crap. There was not one person in that thread that gave me any support, or told that guy he should refrain from pointless and completely wrong criticism.
AVR Freaks on the other hand has a far far higher level of knowledge, yet despite that I've always found the guys here helpful and friendly, even to noobs that have been too lazy to read the data sheet. It's this attitude from the AVR Freaks members that makes me look harder for an answer before asking them for help. I feel guilty wasting their valuable time.
Keith.
Keith, thanks for your observation
I considered to copy your post to "Site-feedback" because that is basically what it is. Feedback. Positive feedback.
But I realised it's not my call. Consider posting it there. It's the last sub-forum on avrfreaks.net
FWIW: I gave your post the 5 stars rating. You deserve it.

Your IP should be only for your eyes.
Wow, thanks for the kind words Nard, didn't expect that.
I've just made a new thread in the Site-Feedback section and posted it there.

I think it's a problem because personally I would like to add Joey, Tom, Johan,Gchapman, Jim wagner, Meslomp,... to the list.
"Hiss Hiss"
The important thing is that the helpers (and there are quite a bunch, your list is not complete, Amin) get a feather on their hat from time to time. It doesn't happen that often that we see posts with this positive energy.
My personal post-rate and help has dropped dramatically in the past years. One of the reasons is the lack of "thanks for your help". It seems to me that help by a forum is taken for granted. Posters asking, sometimes ordering help seem to forget that there are REAL HUMANS (great Swedish TV series BTW) doing the hard work.
I am getting old and grumpy. Finally !

Personally, I've more or less given up on the "I'm totally clueless, quite lazy, can't spel coreklti, talk l33t, must finish exam so just post complete solution although I've given no facts at all".
Five years ago I would have mustered the patience of a turtle but not now.. Just today I told so some he was a hopeless case. Don't feel good about it but it's fact. I would have kept my mouth unless he started cross-posting.
...(and there are quite a bunch, your list is not complete, Amin) ...
Yup! e.g. I forgot to enumerate a good boy such as David Prantice. I really really like him. I don't know why!

Wow they are a great site i dont know whats up lol until this, i lost my first post because i forgot to put notifications on thought it was gone so done another and now have ban over my head, all in two weeks what a lovely forum, even the webmaster took the time out to idiot of himself by not even reading what was put above his ban comment, eek scary.
Ummmm....
Cross posting is not tolerated here either. It would appear that the moderator on the Arduino site warned you about this, but whatever. I am not looking to debate it.
None the less hello, welcome to AVRfreaks
