Been playing with a store display of one of these reels:

Wondering how one would go about building the electronics for it. I assume you would need to generate power for the uC via induction, and then use the same coils/magnets to perform braking and store the power in a supercapacitor or similar.

Any ideas if this is feasible with a pico-power AVR? The control and sensing of the spool doesn't seem to be that difficult, just wondering if there would be enough power to run without a battery.

you can definitely generate enough power via a magnet & coil. Someone posted a project a while back where they made batteryless electronic dice. You shook the dice as you would the real world counterpart, the shaking generated the power via a basic magnet and coil.
