Alternatives to atstk500 and atstk600

Hi,

i digged a while now in this forum and, btw. you are doing a great job here, thanks for that.

As i wrote in my last thread, i am interested to go further and try to buy a atmel ice as a degugger and additionally a development board.
but i don‘t know which to get. within the 500 i a limited to the dips on the board while the 600 offers a bit more, but on a more complex way.
any idea which one to get, or is one of them an absolute nogo, or are there alternives?

every little idea which push me in the right way is more than welcome.

Why not get one of the dev boards with the Atmel-ICE functionality built in?

 

I think there is currently a (25% ?) discount available on the Microchip site ... ?

as i flew over the xplained boards, i did not find boards regarding attiny 8 pin bugs.

In general, companies don't make a separate dev board for every single variant of every chip family - it's just not practical.

 

Anyhow, for learning, you don't want to start with something over-restricted.

But i think i am a bit more flexible within stk600.

That's true; but flexibility makes it all the more complicated - and vastly more expensive!

 

I got the impression you were looking for something simple for a beginner?

 

The XPlained boards are only ~$10; they are automatically detected by Atmel Studio, and directly supported with ready-to-go examples specifically designed for the board.

 

Apart from Arduino (which you say you've already done), I can't think of a better way to get started.

Well right,

i am a beginner(just programming arduinos and pics during the last 3 years). so i decided to program avrs, because of the less stability of the pics.
for my larger projects i did with arduino mega2560, now i need a development card, as well as for my flashlight projects with the tiny‘s.

so i tend to stk600 but, because of you, i think about the xplained boards.

The Xplained Mini boards are a good choice for getting started.  They have both Arduino and straight 0.1" (w/o any funny offsets...), so they can be pinned for plugging into a breadboard and/or accepting Arduino shields.  The mEDBG lets you program and debug the chip.  They are <$10US.

i think, joining this forum was a right decision.(i am using forums since the eighties via modem/mailbox, and i must say this forum is good.
I will have a closer look at the Xplained boards. and btw the costs are as low as possible.
i will let you know what i decided to take.
