Alternative for Markii Programmer is? (for programming AtMega 328)

The guy in THIS VIDEO uses a Markii Programer "in circuit serial programmer" to get his compiled code to either an ATMega 328 and for the AtMega Tiny.

 

 

In addition to using the Markii to get his entire program on the 328 or Tiny...

He also uses it to get bootloader code onto eigher of them so he can transfer future code using the bootloader and two pins on the chip.

 

Most of the Marii Programmers are from China via eBay and have long delivery times...

 

What are other ways to get your code... either an entire program... or just a bootloader... onto one of the AVR chips like the 328 or the Tiny.

There are simpler cut down versions but you need to provide the other bits. It is also a debugger.

Some of those have distributors with stock.

The ATAVRISP2 clone is stocked by Kanda; Kanda has distributors.

Near-clones may be good enough.

Some function-likes (LUFA) are stocked at distributors.

Well most people would use a USBAsp which should cost about $2-3 from eBay.

 

But of course another option is to get your 328 in a slightly different form in the first place. If you buy a $5 Arduino Uno clone you get a 328P mounted on a board with a power supply, clock circuit, USB-UART interface chip and pre-loaded with a bootloader so all you need is a USB cable (sometimes supplied as part of the price anyway) to get the programs you build programmed into the 328P.

 

(oh and just because it is an Arduino board says nothing about needing to use the Arduino IDE and code libraries to program it - you can if you want - but equally you can use any language of choice and build system of choice then simply use avrdude.exe at the end of the process to send what you build to the bootloader in the 328)

 

To be honest, if a bare 328P costs $3 and an Uno costs $5 the choice would seem to be a no-brainer ;-)

Just to add to what cliff said above, an Arduino Uno can also "be" a programmer simply by uploading the programmer sketch, making it into a programmer for other AVR chips, there are also programmer shields available just for that use.
