12v STK500 programming failures

I'm using the 12v for the first time. I notice if I set the fuses for external osc. the chips won't program even if I try to go back to the default setting.

Once you set the fuses for external osc, you will need an external oscillator or clock source to program the chip, as you have then disabled the internal one. The chip requires a running clock source in order to program itself via ISP.

Thanks Glitch,
When I went to bed and was just going to sleep it hit me that the osc. wasn't in. I'll set it up for high voltage programming, I think it puts an osc in the works.
