Ok.

I have received response from atmel:

Dear Customer,

Thank you for contacting Atmel Technical Support.

Please try the following steps and get back with results.

Close Atmel Studio 6.1 and disconnect AVRISPmkII from your PC.
Go to C:\Windows\inf and delete the following .inf files
avrispmkii.inf
AVRDragon.inf
avrone.inf
JTAGICE3.inf
JTAGICEmkII.inf
Go to device manager and uninstall ‘WinDriver’ listed under Jungo Connectivity. While uninstalling, check the box ‘Delete the driver software for this device’ as given in the attached snapshot named ‘pic1.jpg’.
Go to control panel and uninstall ‘Atmel USB’ software.
Restart the PC.
Log in and download the latest version (11.7) of Atmel USB which supports Windows 8.1 from http://gallery.atmel.com/Product...? and install it on your PC.
Restart the PC.
Connect AVRISPmkII to the PC. The driver software should be automatically installed and AVRISPmkII should be listed under Jungo Connectivity in the device manager.
Now open Atmel Studio 6.1and try to use AVRISPmkII.

I will test. See you later :)

Hallo

i have made this and the problem is the same. The AVRISP mkii driver is not installed in windows8.1 device manager.

I've found a solution for me with the following steps:
1. Go to the device manager
2. select AVRISP mkii driver and update the driver
3. when the question comes select "search on the computer for driver"
4. select the device list and select WinDriver from Jugo Connectivity

Now i have two entries "WinDriver" in device manager. Afther this the AVRISP mkii is working in atmel studio 6.1.

Hi Rolf,

I am having the same issue but I'm stuck on your work-around. The only item in the device list when choosing a new driver is JTAGICE MkII. Can you provide any more detail that could help get me going again?

Thanks in advance,
Joe

Hi Rolf,

It looks like I should clarify a bit. My JTAGICE is showing up in the devices list but there is a driver error. Specifically, the device status reads: "Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged (code 19).

Have you seen similar?

Regards,
Joe

Hi Joe

I have another programming adapter (AVRISP mk2) as you. I think the drivers are not the same.

Test following:
1. selected the driver and selected update
2. when the question comes select "search on the computer for driver" than select the device list and select WinDriver from "Jugo Connectivity"
3. install the driver and ignor the windows massage and say yes
4. restart win8.1

Good luck :)

Thanks for the reply but still no luck. Atmel customer service has recommended that I downgrade back through the older versions of Atmel/AVR Studio to see if I can get up and running again. Meanwhile, they are looking at Windows 8.1 compatibility issues.

Just my 2C - this works for me also.
Interestingly Device Manger shows WinDriver - not AVRISPMkII as I would expect.
Oh Well - at least it works!

I finally managed to get something working.

There's something wrong with the package that's installed by this 8.1 driver program.

If you select update driver and choose the driver yourself, you can select Jungo, which has the single device AVRISP.

Selecting that gives the error message "File not found".

If instead at this point you press the "Have Disk" button and choose the "Atmel\Atmel USB\usb64" folder, you are offered the Jungo device WinDriver - if you select this, it installs and the AVRISP starts working.

FYI: For my non-working JTAGICE3, this worked:

1) Install this: http://gallery.atmel.com/Product...?

2) Install this: http://gallery.atmel.com/Product...

3) Open a command prompt and cd to "C:\Program Files (x86)\Atmel\AtmelAtfw"

4) Run this command: atfw.exe -t jtagice3 -a jtagice3_fwv2.zip

To just throw out the official answer: jtagice 3 firmware version 3.x does NOT work in windows 8.1 (nor does it say so :P )

The reason is that the version 3 changed to HID, and Windows 8 made a bit of a mess with the system HID driver giving only partial data to Studio, causing it to ignore it. The fix is either, it seems, to plug the ICE in after studio is started, and don't disconnect, or downgrade to firmware version 2 as bandtank says. We are working on a fix, but I don't have a deadline for that one yet...

Hi Morten,

Just tried v11.8 and I'm still having the same issue with my JTAGICE MkII as described above on my primary machine.

I tried it on a Lenovo Thinkpad II tablet upgraded to Windows 8.1 and wound up having the same issue that Rolf described on that device. No Atmel software had been previously installed.

The new upload does not fix my problem and now the help desk has scrubbed me.
Response quoted below
"I can not reproduce this issue on my computer since I don't have Windows 8.1.
If this is a bug, we will update the Atmel USB driver soon.
At present, if possible, I suggest that you use another PC for this function.
We are sorry for the inconvenience caused."

Hi!
Since i've had same problem and above solution didn't work - i don't have Atmel USB folder, but only AVR Jungo USB folder, but if i point there it says "file not found". Now i managed to solved it this way:

I've had installed Libusb driver - i removed this driver by removing AVRISP MKII device in device manager, where you must enable "remove drivers".
Then re-connect programmer and when exclamation sign appears, select update drivers, "let me choose..." and "have disk" but then you select "let me choose from list" and disable "show only compatible devices". From there you choose windriver. Now programmer works in my case.

I don't post on forums very often but do read them and wanted to thank you all for helping me solve this very infuriating problem.

My thread with tech support at atmel suddenly went cold when I told them that downloading the latest 'AtmelUSB' from the 'Gallery' Had not solved my problem.

Here's my last tech support 'ticket' entry:
/*
Re:avrisp mkII no worky in win8.1 -

I found a work-around on the avr freaks forum and it had nothing to do with disabling driver signing requirements.

Please let me know when you have a permanent fix.

Not trying to be flippant at all but FYI my Digi International XBEE USB adapter worked right away with their drivers so there must be a way...

Everyone complained that Windows had too many security flaws. Now that Microsoft has/is addressing that issue and has imposed new rules for requiring signed device drivers to make sure that some rodent soab hacker doesn't get the chance to do damage everyone complains.

New version of the AtmelUSB drivers was released today, hopefully fixing the isp2 on windows 8.1

They surely did :D

It's good that they finally are doing the security changes, but information is usually sparse w.r.t what changes in versions of Windows, and how us providers should cope with all the versions.

I downloaded the latest release and it didn't work - I then tried the the suggested option of forcing the install as suggested here and it worked with 11.9. So as others have mentioned it does look as if its a signing issue. So my avrdragon now works with windows 8.1. I did this with avr studio up and running and the project and avrdragon all powered up. Not sure if I did this the last time I tried to do this. Many thanks for the advice here at least I now don't have to jump between two computers to work on my project.

I donHi I have been running Atmel Studio 6.0 with an avrisp mk11 using win XP without any problems. I have just purchased a new laptop running win8 which I upgraded to 8.1. I installed atmel studio 6.1 and the avrusb using the gallery to install Arduino and upgrade the usb drivers. However the device programming was unable to identify the tool no matter what I tried. Eventually I noticed in the information in the gallery to download the arduino it mentioned win8 needs to enable .net3.5. I did this reinstalled and guess what it worked! It would be useful in view of the various post I have seen to emphasis this requirement. Win8 has .net4 enabled, net3.5 is present but not enabled.

I was having a problem where my mkII and Dragon programmers were not being detected as attached in Atmel Studio 6.2 on my Windows 8.1 (64-bit) box.  All had been working prior to upgrading to 6.2 and moving from Windows 7 to 8.1 (64-bit).  Here is what I did to make the Dragon and mkII programmers work:

1) Use Studio 6.2 to locate and download the "AtmelUSBInstaller-6.2.237.exe" file.  This is **NOT** the "AtmelUSB.exe" version 11.9 found on Atmel's mkII or Dragon websites.

2) Plug in your mkII/Dragon and use the Windows Device Manager to uninstall their drivers - this seems an important step

3) Uninstall all instances of the AtmelUSBInstaller and AtmelUSB via Control Panel's Add/Remove Programs

4) Unplug all mkII and Dragons from your system

5) Reboot (not sure if necessary, but it's Windows and won't hurt)

6) Find the "AtmetUSB-6.2.236.exe" program and run it to install the proper drivers

7) Follow directions as necessary to install - nothing special necessary

8) Only after it is complete should you plug in any mkII or Dragon devices

9) Confirm in Windows Device Manager that the attached devices show up under the Jungo group

10) Start Studio 6.2 and confirm that the attached programmer shows up in the Tools-->Device Programming dialog box (under the "Tool" drop down listbox)

I hope this helps somebody - took me a long weekend of experimentation to discover what works.

Go to control panel and uninstall ‘Atmel USB’ software.
Restart the PC.

Now open Atmel Studio 6.1and try to use AVRISPmkII.

I will test. See you later :)

Did almost the same and it works! I think the only difference is I downloaded atmelUSBinstaller Version6.2 for Atmel Studio instead of Atmel USB(11.7). link: https://gallery.atmel.com/Products/Details/6873be43-0628-46ac-ba83-286869a3d97a?

Hi, I am a newbie.

My Avrisp-mkii doesn't work with Atmel Studio 6.2 Sp1 in x64 Windows 8.1 computer.

I can see Avrisp Mkii driver and WinDriver at Jungo connectivity in Device manager.

And my Avrisp-mkii's two lamps are lit green but there is no tool to find in Astudio.

So I tried to find out solve it's problem several way, and I finally come to this team.

I struggled with to enter inside http://gallery.atmel.com/...... as members wrote a link above when I tried to get reach that address for download a latest USB Driver file V11.9 after fill in my Atmel login ID and password.

When I try it always display that "401 - Unauthorized: Access is denied due to invalid credentials. You do not have permission to view this directory or page using the credentials that you supplied."

I don't know what my problem is.

Colud someone send a latest USB Driver file for me to succeed?

The drivers are included in the installation package of Studio.  Most likely when the install was done you accidentally either chose not to install them, OR you got stuck in the trap where you have to acknowledge every USB device Atmel uses during the drivers install and missed the MKII

you can simply re-install studio, or I have attached the USB installer utility, use that.

Just wanted to mention that I tried all of the stuff here and it still didn't work.

The driver would install fine, AVRISP mk2 would show up in the Device Programming window.

But when I tried to click apply it would eventually say it could not connect to the tool.

Then I found this link, went through each step, including the command prompt stuff before running the wizard that I downloaded, and it worked:
