Would you file a GCC bug report?
I cannot say if there will be a working solution for 4.7
You can speed up matters by working out small test case that still reproduces the issue and by following the bug reporting policies.
avrfreaks does not support Opera. Profile inactive.
Georg-Johann Lay has already done it :-) I just added another complaint http://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=56219
I've tested avr-gcc-4.8.0 20130306 (experimental) and i've got next results: gcc version 4.7.2 4.8.0 mega162proj 14464 14652 + 1.3% of flash usage mega1281proj 71198 71432 + 0.32% of flash usage
Do you plan to make release of 4.7.3 and 4.8.0?
That is:

It's a pity. :(
