I wasn't sure which forum to post this, so since this is a software tools forum, here.....

I recently noticed the new price on the AVR-JTAGICE-3. It's now $100 cheaper than it was introduced at and $200 less than the older jtag-mark-II. Rather temping, but has support for this yet been added to the latest avr-dude or avrice? If not, is it worth setting up vmware-vmplayer on Linux to run a copy of Windows-7 to run avrstudio (and would that even work with the jtag under USB)? Also just how good IS the jtag-ice3 compared to the older mark-II, and the Dragon?

Perhaps start here, and the linked thread?

A "crapload" faster according to Dean ...

You can put lipstick on a pig, but it is still a pig.

I've never met a pig I didn't like, as long as you have some salt and pepper.

Joerg recently (6 months say) announced that avarice now has ICE3 support so the AS6 only restriction should no longer apply.

Yes, support's in the code base, but no new releases since. An
AVRDUDE release is long overdue anyway, however.

I wouldn't claim the support for it being the ultimate thing
yet, there are still some rough edges, but who doesn't have them?
(Just remember data breakpoints in Atmel Studio ...) In particular,
bytewise EEPROM updates aren't yet there.
