I have a few applications for switching regulators, and I haven't used them before. The requirements vary, which is why I mentioned all-purpose, but that's not a hard requirement, by which I mean I'm also interested in boost-only or buck-only devices if you think I should look at them.

Some of the applications:

3 cell battery (4.8V->3.3V) to 5V, 100 or maybe 200mA. I know, not a lot of battery life at those current draws, but it's what I need. I could also look at a boost-buck converter and use 4 cells (6.4->4.4V to 5V).

12V to 7.5V at up to 1A.

The other applications are essentially variants of those.

So what parts should I be looking at? Cheap system price is nice, especially for the 3 or 4 cell battery app.

Been wondering about that myself.

This looks like a nice part. Reasonable price, select the output v by resistor value, don't have to carefully select many different C's for every application...

I like the WIDE input voltage range.

These are Buck only but they do work well and are reasonably priced.

Consider ON's NCP1402SN50T1G
Input: 0.8V to 5.5V
Output: 5V & 200ma

Also, Sparkfun has a board with this part plus associated components for $6:

Woa. Now that's about as close as you can get to a 3 terminal regulator. Just ordered some, with capacitors, shotkey diodes, and inductors.

Any similar buck converter parts?
