I'm planning to use a M8 or M48 device. I want to use PC6 as I/O instead of Ext. Reset. Doing so will disconnect the reset circuitry from that pin. Then serial programming thru SPI port will be no longer available. Is that true? Even worse, I'll have no access to the fuse bits again and re-activate the ext. reset.

Any suggestions?

The only way to reprogram those parts will be to use parallel programming, or possibly high voltage serial (I'm not sure on the High voltage serial, as I don't have the datasheet infront of me right now)

If you're using the DIP version of the part, I suggest socketing the chip on your board, so you can always pull it out, and reprogram it on a STK 500.

Writing code is like having sex.... make one little mistake, and you're supporting it for life.

I wonder if the 1 wire programming/debug mode still works if the reset pin is used for I/O

But M8 does not support Debugwire!
