I was under the impression that they were giving away the original JTAG-ICE and not the new one. What a pleasant surprise. :mrgreen:

I'm confused as to how Atmel handles their giveaways. It's always advertised as a "chance to receive" or "eligible to win" but it seems that whoever goes to the seminars gets what they expected, or I guess sometimes more than they expected.
It's been suggested that they word it that way so that they can back out of freebies if they so choose.. still, it's a bit odd.
Let me know when you receive your JTAG ICE.. im curious how many "a select few" actually is.

i see the follwoing problems with mkII:
1) mkII is not supported by c-spy until end of this year
2) data-breakpoint are not available
and mkII is still not able to set software breakpoints.
so the only advantage is the higher transfer speed when it comes to loading the program memory.

Well, it DOES support debugWire--if Atmel ever gets the debugWire devices into the supply chain.

It also connects via USB which frees up a serial port for more important things.a

Got the old JTAG ICE a couple days agoi. Guess they're clearing out old inventory where possible!

I think Atmel seminar people must be afraid of getting nosebleeds. They're not coming anywhere near here.
I received my JTAG ICE about two weeks after the seminar. After I learned how to use AVaRICE it worked very well. It's great for programming. But, I have only used it a little for debugging and that worked just fine.

Does it have a completely different circuit than the orignal JTAGICE?
Is there any chance to upgrade the original JTAGICE to the mkII?

I got mine today, finally (It took nearly 6 weeks for it to arrive). A shiny new MK-II. Well not so shiny, due to poor packaging, and poor handling, during shipping, the case is all scratched up. The unit was packaged into an oversized box, rendering all of the nicely cut packaging material, meant to hold everything in place, useless. The result is that the MK-II shifted in the box, putting pressure on the target board connector at the end of the FFC cable, causing the connectors solder tails to gouge into the plastic housing of the MK-II. The result is a rather used looking (well used at that) MK-II. The FFC cable and connectors appear to still be intact, so the damage appears to be cosmetic only, thankfully.
I can't complain, really. In the end, I got a MK-II instead of what I expected to be a first gen jtag only, and all of this for free :).
I have just received my JTAGICE MkII from the Toronto semminar.

At it's heart you have 2 M128's (MLF package), a Samsung 512Kx8 SRAM, and an IDT 1Kx9 Dual Asynchronous FIFO.
Any idea why there are 2 M128's used?
Any idea why it needs such a big RAM (512kB) and the FIFO?
Which chip is located near the USB connector?

It's a Philips USB-Parallel interface. (PDIUSBD12)
As to why 2 m128's and so much ram, you'll have to ask the Atmel engineer who designed it. Though I suspect one m128 is dedicated to the USB, while the other is dedicated to the jtag. As for the fifo, it is probably used to reduce the load on the AVR, allowing the jtag interface to run at a much higher rate. (it also may be used as a fifo for the usb interface, as I have no idea what bus it is connected to, though the application would be the same, increasing the datarate)

The 'F' part is a Fairchild Semiconductor chip. I believe it is a 74AC377. On my board the chip os marked:

What's the difference on the package of these MEGA128's vs the TQFP most people are used too?
They're in MLF (Micro Lead Frame) packages. 64-pins, 9x9mm.
I received a JTAG ICE mkII last month. I didn't have the time to try it yet. I was at the seminar in Montreal and the sales guy told me that if they don't have enough old version, they will ship the new one. Lucky for me, I already had an old one. :D

i got a mk2 which makes me happy had to pester the distributer a few time for them to mail it though. havent realy tried it out as i havent gotten my greedy little hands on a programmer yet. was trying to find out if the mk2 had isp before i purchased a separate system. the final word from atmel is that it currently does not suport much isp (debugwire fuse only) however the next version of avr studio thats coming out early next year. im debating just waiting for that while i mess around in my pic class as i cant realy afford an stk500 right now
