I am sure I am not the only one with an EVK1100 who would like to use the 2 microscopic 80 and 40 pins 1.27mm x 1.27mm dual header holes on the right side of the EVK1100
The images below, if you right click and - Open Image in new tab - they will be much larger and easier to see the detail.
those holes are 1.27mm by 1.27mm or 0.05" x 0.05"
Next to it is wasted space covered in standard 0.1" holes for prototyping, a brilliant idea - not.
According to the Schematic the headers consist of 2X20 FEMALE HEADER and 2X40 FEMALE HEADER
Although when you examine the schematic obviously that is NOT correct as there is no gap, it is a one piece 80 pin header with no gap.
I wonder if anyone has found a solution to making those holes useable.
If no one has a better idea, I propose to make a PCB with the same holes down the middle, so the board can be placed on top and connected to EVK1100 with a MALE-Male header or more simply, a spacer and insert a solid piece of wire in each hole and solder each wire end from underneath the EVK1100 and the top of my proposed PCB
I propose to place single rows of 0.1" headers on the left side connected to the 1.27mm holes on the left and the mirror image of that on the right side.
To recap a rectangular PCB with a copy of the exact 1.27 X 1.27mm holes and to the right and left of that the signals routed to 0.1" spacing holes.
As they say a picture is worth a thousand words, so here is half a picture [500 words ?] of what I propose showing only the right side of the board.
The other side should end just before the right edge of the LCD and the rigth edge of the joystick.
It is not possible to use Dual Headers because if you take a real close look at those tiny pads on the EK1100 you will find that many of the round pads have the side cut to allow a signal to fit between the holes and I am not proposing to follow that horrible example.
Which tells us all that however routed the EVK100 PCB already knew he or she was doing SOMETHING SERIOUSLY WRONG as you dont cut the sides of round pads on PCBs.
If someone has a better idea I would like to hear it.
If anyone is interested on the proposed PCB, please let me know.
NO THIS IS NOT ADVERTISING.
THIS IS SHEER DESPERATE self help TO OVERCOME AN ATMEL MISTAKE.
Another idea, why doesn't ATMEL volunteer to do such a board and deliver it GRATIS to every one who owns an EVK100.
Or they can offer it for cost, they know the run quantity as they know how many EVK1100 they have produced.
