I use a USB to serial cable to connect the STK500 with the PC. In AVR Studio but I took a few problems ... In the beginning was working normally but then suddenly I do not recognize the programmer. I press the programmer to choose from COM3 to which is attached

And I try, and I connect failed. it show the same window.

Neither in my choice auto recognize.

And the thing is that he planned 2-3 times before.
I tried to put it in another USB port but it does the same.

Check device manager, does it show up there?

This connection windows only lists a few ports which you can choose from. Returning to this window means connection has failed, or no STK500 is found at that port.

From memory, you can only upgrade stk500.ebn from COM1..COM4. So you may find that "Avr Prog" will not look at COM5. Re-assign to a lower COM# via Device Manager if it says it cannot find the COM#.

Windows is very good at losing virtual COM ports. If in doubt, unplug the USB cable and plug it in again. If you still have problems, reboot the PC.

Your STK500 is probably fine. Only upgrade if you are told to.

The STK500 should work perfectly with any USB->RS232 cable, even the cheapest eBay variety.

Avrprog will only work with COM1..COM4, if it's on COM5 it won't be found.

The STK500 itself can work on any COM port. It tends to be the controlling software that restricts to certain COM#s. e.g. Studio only searches COM1..COM8 unless you change the Options. AVRProg only searches COM1..COM4. CodeVision only allows COM1..COM16 (I think)

If you use stk500.exe or avrdude.exe, you can use any COM# that you like.

Of course software could offer you a drop-down menu that only offers "openable" COM# ports. But this is too easy.

The current V2.05.1 scans for all available COM ports and let you chose any of them.
