If you are content with just programming AVRs, then you don't need to buy a programmer.
You can program AVRs through a PC printerport, with a schematic here:
http://www.qsl.net/ba1fb/avrisp.gif

That circuit emulates a STK200/300 programming interface, without the buffer chip and other hardware. You just need 5 wires and preferably some resistors to protect your printerport.
This quick&cheap programmer needs to be unplugged if you want to use the SPI port after programming, but otherwise it works just fine (I am using it extensivly).

The STK200/300 interface is being supported by PonyProg
http://www.lancos.com/prog.html
and Imagecraft AVR C and CodeVision AVR C. You can even automatically download after programming.

ATAVRISP unit from Atmel is nice to use but very unreliable.
It periodically looses its clock setting and goes into 'slow' programming mode and it's not very reliable - I am on number 3 after 18 months.
Anyone know a good robust professional device to compete with ATAVRISP?

I seem to remember a programmer called "Picall" from Dontronics that programmed both.
 I'm not used to this new format yet :?
