Lock bits and application code

Is it possible in the xmega to erase the application section from the bootloader and clear the application's lock bits?

That is if you erase the application section does it clear the lock bits for application section or do you have to clear whole flash to erase lock bits? From what I have read you have to earse all the flash. However then there is no way to do secure firmware updates from a bootloader, correct?

Lockbits and Boot lockbits are different. Lockbits are related to external programming interface and boot lockbits are related to application programming by bootloader. When BLBA bits are in NOLOCK or RLOCK states, Application section programming can be done from Bootloader. See table 4.9 in page 34 of XMEGA A manual.
