I was just wondering if anyone had interfaced a USB FLASH drive onto a uProc ? It doesn't need to be fast, and it would be ideal if you could get away without any additional ICs, just tag the drive onto a few I/O lines and emulate everything in software. I know that this could be an involved thing to do, but it would be very useful for mass storage and data transfer. (I know I can easily do this other ways using memory cards or ICs, so I am only interested in learning more about the USB drive solution).

Any thoughts, suggestions, advice greatly appreciated.

Dean has. See prior threads and his LUFA section at www.fourwalledcubicle.com

You of course need an AVR that can do "host" which means AT90USB647 or USB1287

Failing that you might want to see if anyone has "bit banged" it on the V-USB website though that is usually device not host.
