I have damaged a STK600

I have an XPLAIN board connected to a STK600 via its JTAG header. (the STK600 supplies 3V via VTG on the JTAG header).

I programmed the AT90USB1287 via the JTAG in the normal way.

Then I connected the USB cable to the XPLAIN board which supplies its own 3V3 to the XPLAIN.

Now the STK600 is dead. One red LED next to the on-off switch. No VTG LED of any colour. No recognition of the STK600 as an USB device. And hence no communication at all.

I hope that I have not done too much damage. Before I try to look at the STK600 schematic, has anyone any suggestions.

I am a little surprised to have done anything so catastrophic when the two voltage supplies are similar. I could understand 5V fighting 3V3 would entail a winner and loser. (or possibly two dead losers)

Does anyone have a schematic for the STK600?

There does not appear to be a link via the Studio Help/

The STK600 should have been designed to prevent such damage. Why not return it as faulty?

I would agree that this situation should be "designed against".

But since both the STK500 and STK600 manuals specify "remove VTG jumper if external board has its own supply", I suspect I should regard this as my own fault.

If there is a simple solution, it would be easier to just replace one or two components myself. ( I got the STK600 via the ArrowUK XMEGA workshop )

No. I just put the STK600 in a drawer and put it down to experience. The STK600 is very delicate.

The STK500 is virtually bomb-proof. And if you do damage something, you can possibly fix it with the help of the schematic.

So if I want to try something on my XPLAIN board, I just connect the ports to the STK500 or other external hardware.

Having just purchased the EK-LM3S1968 Luminary evaluation kit for ARM Cortex-M3, you can see just how effective a cheap evaluation kit can be. A development kit will be more expensive, but IMHO should be built more robustly.

Microchip has a policy of replacing their professional development tools, no matter how old they are, and even if the user has done something silly. You won't lose anything by asking Atmel if they will do the same.

The STK600 needs a schematic! I found that the voltage reference signal is connected to PA0 with jumper (makes sense now). I was jumpering ADC pins to Vcc and Gnd to test ADC and the power fault light came on.

It could be that one vbus, vref or other jumpers are configured in a way in conjunction with the Xplain to present an excessive current load.

It all starts with a mental vision.
