Why are standard 2.54mm through hole female headers so expensive at Mouser and Digikey? I'm I not looking in the right place?

Reliable ones are expensive.

maybe if you looked for 0.1" pitch, they would be cheaper. Euro and all that, you know!

Check Sure Electronics. They have regular and round hole sockets and headers. 0.1"

I sometimes have a hell of a time knowing what to search for on Digikey.

Fortunately I have records of previous orders.

I found what I think you are after by searching for "conn recept".

Here's a 72 position (36 by 2 row?) gold 3M socket for $6.85. I always buy the biggest one they sell and then cut them to fit.

A search of "Inexpensive AND Female AND Head" yields lots of hits on craigslist and google, you even get pictures and sometimes videos too.
