I need to design a digital function generaor of range upto 5MHZ in 1HZ resolution(sine, Triangle, Square)(or atleast Square). which microcontroller i can choose? will AVR32 be suitable for this projects or any other DSP? please suggest me! Thankyou verymuch in advance!

You could probably use an AVR32, sure. Square would be dead easy on the PWM hardware, the other shapes would be doable up to maybe 1MHz, though it depends on how many samples you want per cycle.

I reckon the best part for the job though might be something a bit more DSPish, probably Blackfin from Analog Devices.

A software DDS is the easiest approach. 5 MHz should be achievable with something fast like a Blackfin - you need about 400 MIPS. I thought that an XMOS chip could do it (1600 MIPS total), but each thread is only 100 MIPS maximum.

from Analog Devices. I have not used, nor do I work for Analog... but was thinking something like this might mean a 8bit AVR might do what you need.
