Hi all,

I'm looking for a small LCD module for use with my mega128. I need it to display 30 characters (16x2 character format looks good) including the time, date and some other bits and pieces on information (alphanumeric).

Reading through other posts, I am aware that that I can use my I2C, UART or a parallel communication. I would prefer to avoid the later as I don't any sequential sets of pins left over.

Looking through catalogs however, I can only find parallel connected LCDs and there is a big range in price.

Can anyone recommend a specific LCD module that they use, preferably I2C or RS232, or a hardware solution that might be used to connect a parallel LCD screen (e.g. RS232 -> parallel 'converter').

Any ideas or suggestions much appreciated!

Well the ones that offer I2C or UART are really just parallel ones with a microcontroller on the back anyway. There's nothing to stop you doing just that yourself. Stick one of the bigger tiny's or a small mega (48 perhaps) on a small board with the HDD44780 compatible LCD and then run 2/3 wires from that to the 128.

In fact I'm pretty sure Carl posted a project ("serial backpack") offering just such a solution previously.

EDIT: here's thew link:

he uses a tiny2313 in fact

Haven't used them, but these look pretty cool. Can be used both in parallel and SPI mode, at 3.3V or 5V: http://www.lcd-module.de/eng/pdf/doma/dog-me.pdf

I have used Carls backpack and I can say it is a real cool animal.
