When you are stuck, you use what you can find. Looks perfectly reasonable to me. Resistance is a bit high, but if it does the job, does it matter?

Given that the wire cross section is much smaller than a proper cable and steel much less conductive than copper, I estimate "a bit" = 50x a copper jumper cable.

Hold on, the wire cross-section is enough for 12V charging.

 

Current to bring this wire to a nice orange color must be much, much higher.

Looking at the thickness of that barbed wire, and at data from the table, I'm guessing it would melt with 200-300 Amps.

Will that be enough to start the engine? IDK, I'm not familiar with car electric systems.

No; those trucks appear to be early 00s Ford 3/4 ton or 1 ton which means gasoline V10 or diesel V8 (7.3 liters, approx 10K USD for a trade in of such '00)

Charging SLA to 25% SoC may be enough to start those engines though if there's snow on the ground then 50% Soc is better; those models of Ford trucks have increased vampire discharging sometimes due to third party trailer brake controllers.

Some Ford trucks have the auxiliary idle control option with a battery charge switch (engine idle speed increases, battery voltage is displayed, 11 volts is minimum recommended for starting)

For those Ford trucks, easier to have a lithium battery for jump starting that's charged then placed into the glove box or the tool box.

Big Clive tested one of those with hilarious results: Shorting out a fully charged cheap lithium jump starter. (It didn't end well)

I have one of those little jump boxes, and it does indeed work.  Managed to start a couple of large Suburbans with big V8 engines.  Took a couple tries but it did work.

That setup probably would work if the low battery isn't down too far and they give it time to charge. I would think that you might want a couple of ohms in the

circuit to prevent glowing barbed wire.

 

Somewhere on the net, I have seen a video of some guys using AK-47s as the connectors for to the battery terminals.

They were successful. I can only assume that the AKs were NOT loaded at the time. Why they did that -- I have no idea.

I once tried to convince a guy making electric motors to use silver wire, instead of copper.  In that particular application, it would have made a lot of sense (dinky little motor - barely the size of half a cigar, that was supposed to run up to 100krpm (Yes, one hundred thousand rpm(!!))).  They didn't go for it, and their entire enterprise collapsed shortly afterwards.  For lots of different reasons...  S.

Silver wire is used in electronics, I found it in Hard Disc moving coil.

 

Also, -hope this info is true- from college, info that during the WW2, US produced power transformers with solid n/0 AWG silver wire. Just because the copper was more important, and expendable.
