I really love XMEGAs.

They are easy to use, reliable and you don't need ASF to work with them!

It is a shame that you barely cannot buy them anymore...

The new AVRxDx have become a strong competition.  Available in DIP packages, with 5V and useful extras such as built-in level converters. There is a simpler programming interface. And you can buy the devices. Cheaper too.

But all recent Tiny and Mega are also "Xmega" so just because it doesn't say "Xmega" on the tin doesn't mean it's not Xmega so there's now a ton of Xmega models to choose from.

While not definitive just see if the device has CCP on some of the most sensitive registers.

Present in some AVRxm (XMEGA) are

  • DMA
  • EBI
  • USB
  • crypto engine

AVR Dx is the follow-on to megaAVR and somewhat for XMEGA D which lacks the four unique characteristics.

Less expensive (pedantic); cheap may imply low quality.

Well, there are similarities but also big differences.

Not just the features that I had previously mentioned as AVRxDx advantages.

Some hardware features are also missing:

Have not (strictly) used XMega here, but am using Mega4809. Love some things, hate some others. Unfortunately, the things I really like are built on the things that drive me up the wall. Will probably end up this project diagnosed as a schizophrenic!

I will definitely check those new chips.

So far, xmegas are still my favorite.

Me and my team even certified a medical ventilator with some of those chips on it.

I have contemplated XMegas- then I realized that having nested Interrupts is not a big deal.

You need a very good reason to do it nested (although the very idea is very old, ref. Z80).
