Can someone help me find the IDC connectors on digikey that are used on ribbon cables for ISP and JTAG programming (2x3 and 2x5). Can't seem to find them.

John,
You get 10/10 and a big elephant stamp for that excellent work.
It would be nice if this post did not get lost in the noise. hint hint
Nice post John.
Those connectors are awful to find. Sometimes Digi-Key has one - but it goes in and out of stock. It seems like such a straight forward part too.

Works too, helluvalot cheaper, if you can manage to figure out which pin is 1... :)
I have posted this a few times before but even I can't find it  just as well I keep a copy here.
I've taken the hint and made it sticky - if anyone disagrees then let me know. Perhaps it should become a more general thread title such as "supply of components often used in AVR designs" or something like that with suitable additions then being made?

I never had problems when ordering items like this through farnell, I do not know if this s a good alternative in the US (digikey seems to be mostly used there)

John - I just realized you made the same mistake as me a little while back. This part is not compatible with the AVR ISP connector.
However, I believe that another FCI part, 609-2845-ND, is compatible. I haven't used it though - as it tends to be out of stock when I need it!

Not sure how much you order from Farnell(or whatever they are calling them self’s today)and therefore what prices you get, but in general Farnell is around 20% more expensive than Digikey(Mouser is close, but Digikey is still a little cheaper for most of the products). Also, when you order above 60.00 euro, shipping is free.
It’s not that I’m biased, I’ve ordered products from all those companies and others, they all have a good service(let’s say, the only difference when ordering from Farnell, is that the goods are there the next day or the day after, with Digikey it’s one day more (to Belgium)) , it’s just the price, why pay more for the same thing?
Sometimes I ask myself, how do they(Farnell) do it?
Digikey is often more expensive than others in small quantities for discrete parts and standard logic, but they have a good stock of specialty IC's others don't. And they are just convenient to order from TBH, best no-fat catalog IMO.

This part is not compatible with the AVR ISP connector.
Yeah Farnell is expensive, but you get stuff the next day. Both Farnell and Newark merged into Element 14, but even though they fall under the same company the prices are considerably different. Was looking at a programmable gain amplifier PGA116 and there was something like a $3-5 difference per chip (Farnell being the more expensive one).
I still pay for the speed though :).
Thanks for the responses guys. Mainly what I am looking for is the one part that js posted above:

This is the kind of cable I need right?
http://search.digikey.com/script...
Yes.
Personally I keep a supply of wide ribbon cable and split off the number of conductors I need.
Pololu has 6-pin shrouded male connectors (http://www.pololu.com/catalog/product/854) as well as the mating females (not as dirty as it sounds): (http://www.pololu.com/catalog/product/855).
I usually buy the breakable 2x40 headers, and break them to 2x3. It's much cheaper, but not shrouded so you must pay attention.
Things like this are really robbery on digikey - I think better to buy noname stuff from ebay/china, unless it is mission critical.
For example - the cable side connector, one at digikey is 82 cents, or 10 for $7.24.
On ebay 10 is $3.90, shipped. Chinese no-name stuff, but.. sufficient.
Check my post here (near the end) to see how to convert an ISP header for breadboard use in case you need to...

Since the new site launched, Atmel seem to be using an invalid cert for their HTTPS traffic.
I don't use IDC headers, just built something like this: http://www.electricstuff.co.uk/p... and leave free pads on the boards for production.
Appears similar to a Tag-Connect.
Tag Connect
What is Tag Connect?
Appears similar to a Tag-Connect.
Exactly, same spring probes.
I've had some success with press-fit IDC header as a cheapskate alternative to the Tag-Connect probes. These headers plug into standard 0.1 inch PTH header footprints, and hold sufficiently well for plugging and unplugging programming cables. The header is removable and hence reusable. I don't know the endurance of this setup, though.
The pcb holes for the header are drilled to 1.1mm diameter, plated through, on a 1.6mm double sided board.
The specific header that worked for me is the TE 104350-3 (this is the 2x3 pin version). Digikey's part number is A122684-ND, while mouser's part number is 571-104350-3. The price is just over USD1 each right now.

My experience is - from cheap to expensive:
- Arrow (free shipping over US$50)
- Element 14 (free shipping over US$25)
- RS Components (free shipping over US$30)
- Mouser (free shipping over US$50)
- Digikey (free shipping over US$50)
However during these bad days, prices fluctuate everyday within the same company and between different companies. Rich companies may clear a part's stock in one day!
Surely there are multiple Distributors with local warehouses in Hong Kong.
Farnell delivers to my door in less than 24 hours. (typical Leeds to Wormshill in 15 hours)
I can't believe that they ship from Leeds to Hong Kong this quickly.

Please un-pin fossil posts regularly.
We rely on the intelligence of posters to check on the date before posting.
But I'll lock the thread as the information regarding the connectors is still valid.
