I'm looking for a solution, I have a Rpi located in another room (downstairs) that I need to connect to some equipment located upstairs, what I need is a wireless(wifi) telnet serial comm device to make the connection.

Looking at an ESP8266 transceiver device to do this, anyone used one of these (link below) to replace a wired cable connection?

A ready built solution would be ok, if the price is not too high (I know, what is high, I'll know when I see it)  I've used IP based serial terminal devices commercially, but those were pricey for this project.

 

open to ideas at this point

You could put another rpi at the remote location & have extreme flex...hook up a screen & see that incoming is proper, etc.  maybe $$

funny...I just got some of the ESP parts, they are larger and have more pins (about size of a nano board) & include a little LCD.

How about a Feather-M0 or what-ever  with the WiFi option. I think that that gives you the option of WiFi with no WiFi programming. With Circuit Python, you would just have to pump data in and out of the wiFi port. Pretty inexpensive and modest power needs (22 mA for combined M0 and WiFi at 48MHz). FeatherM0+WiFi has 3 open USARTs.

 

Have not gone down this road but considering it (or something else in the Feather family) pretty seriously for an add-on to my accelerometer.

almost identical and easier to find in "western" coutries is WizFi360, at around 3euro

wizfi360, just like esp supports transparent mode with a few "telnet" commands, after these is just send and receives,

wiznet also offers evaluation boards, prebuitl and ready to use, at low imho prices ->https://shop.wiznet.eu/evaluatio...

 

if the "control client program" is a windwos OS program, they also offer a virtual COM port, making 100% transparent the "tcp/ip" interconnection

 

for me the main advantage of wiznet is NOT technical, but the fact that a) you find their products in european/usa warehouses (legal) b) they talk english, c) they have manuals in english...

WFI32-IoT is 71USD; a WFI32 module is 50 mil pitch (1.27 mm) and 14USD.

Almost with Atmel WINC (Wi-Fi network controller); add an application to bridge a TCP socket to a UART.

Displays are indeed some money; one might consider embedded Linux instead of a common Linux distribution and MIPS instead of Arm (iow a Wi-Fi router)

For curiosity: why do you want/need to replace a cable? The cable seems better in almost every way than a wireless link if it's working and undamaged: no fighting for bandwidth with other networks, no fading due to building materials, better security etc.

 

I  needed to get a decent link from the living room - where my supplier link equipment terminates at the phone socket - to the basement and found wifi unreliable (concrete floors) and tp-link mains connections also intermittent, as the cellar and the living room are on different house circuits. Sometimes it worked, but two or three times a day I had to walk through the house resetting the links. I ended up using some cheap flat 100Mb cable with an RJ-45 at each end and it's both discrete and working very well.

I use a tp-link Deco P9 mesh network. Used to have very sketchy wifi coverage all over the place now it's rock solid (even to streaming camera footage) everywhere. I am very impressed.

Thanks, I'm going to try the ebay board and see if it will work for me.....   Freaks rock!

 

update: found a similar board that ships from the US so should arrive next week. I'll let you all know how it goes.

Thought it looked very interesting as it has both an ESP32 doing WiFi, BLE etc but also an RP2040 and then there is 240x135 IPS screen on there too. That's a lot of combined computing power for quite a low price.
