IS there any way other than looking through teh datasheet of the micros to find out if that device has a unique serial number in it? The Mega328PB has one, but the Mega324 does not. I looked at the parametric spreadsheet from teh microchip site, but no column I could find answers this question

Not sure this is even valid, but I did a search using windows grep (grepwin) program (a pretty good searcher!!--much better than windoz searcher)...it found 900+ files, (many duplicates of old versions), as can be seen
This also assumes such parts use some form of SIGROW_SERNU.... for serial numbering (You know they'd never vary the name, 
)
Again, this may be full of holes & water (I did not check the results)
You will have to search, since it is about 7 screens of spitout.

I think I got this scheme from Clawson, when I was lookin for chips that have the PLL clock multiplier for fast PWM (another missing column).

Aside from this, I wonder how all these duplicate files can be cleaned up (removed)? I don't need old versions of parts I never ever used. Perhaps Studio has a cleanup/manager button?

The three parts I had in mind....'328PB, and the XMEGA32E5 both have the uniqueID in some form. But it required digging into the data sheets to find what they are called. The '324 sadly does not.
I will look into GREP. But I think if I look at the parametric table, and find teh devices with 2 usarts, and the other peripherals I need, then look at their datasheets for the uniqueID I will also find what I am looking for as well.
GREP does look like a cool tool to get knowledge on.

Well, that was interesting...I noticed my search did NOT turn up any 328PB's (which is where I got the item to search for in the first place--from the 328PB data sheet)....maybe the software files are lagging behind
The latest studio files I had for the 328pb are:

is it indeed not easier to first make a short list of devices that have all your needs and then quickly go through the datasheets of those and make a final list?
with 2 uarts a lot of the mega and tinys can be scratched off the list, might be that the other requirements will leave you with only a couple of choices.
You might perhaps even just need to download the datasheet summary to get your answers if you do not have much bandwith to download full spec.
