the company I work for has the current opening:

linux software engineer

Lynxspring, Inc. develops, manufactures and distributes edge-to-enterprise solutions and IoT technology to create intelligent buildings, energy management systems, equipment control and specialty machine-to-machine and IoT applications. Lynxspring technologies and solutions simplify connectivity, integration, interoperability, data access and normalization and analytics from the edge to the enterprise and are deployed in billions of square feet of commercial settings in the United States and internationally.

Job Description

The successful candidate will be a member of the Lynxspring, Inc. Research and Development Team. We are looking for a self-directed motivated individual to take on design and development of projects as an individual contributor, and as a member of small to medium size teams. This candidate must be able to devise new and revolutionary ideas. We need an outside the box thinker. The successful candidate will be expected to aid and, in some cases, lead certification efforts; UL, FCC, CE, etc. The candidate will be asked to participate in many different facets of the product development pipeline, all the way from Ideation to final product and quality control.

I have not looked at yocto in years, but at the time, it did not seem to help with figure out what things could be used together (e.g., systemd vs. init); anyone can build Linux, but quality systems take decades to sort out. The amount of effort that can go into integrating a Linux system and keeping it somewhat up to date and secure is ridiculous. Would it not be better to design in an R-Pi board and use PiOS or Ubuntu? Then interface with AVRs (or whatever) in a way that firmware updates can be done.

Raspberry Pi and some derivatives cover a portion of the industrial temperature range (long poles in the tent - flash, DRAM)

Some 512MB industrial SD cards are inexpensive.

SAM9X60 Yocto is 163MB with a LCD and touch screen; IIRC, Linux kernel is 1MB.

Once you build for one of these devices, how difficult is it to upgrade to the current mainline? Not to mention updating the kludge of network services entangled with a dozen other services, I already know enough of that to hide. It seems like every week, a new problem is found that allows exploits, and rarely does this sort of hardware get the updates it needs to fix those problems. It would not be so bad if networking were to be excluded from the LCD device, but who does that.

Just to add some detail to what is needed, our current products are built around a custom version of the beagle bone black, that has worked well for us, but we are looking to evolve to the next generation.

You know, more memory, speed, security, ect... the tread mill never stops!
