Suggestions for components reading speed of quad copter roters.

I bought my granddaughter one of those 14 dollar quad copters. It’s pretty fun to fly . I had a brain fart about connecting the small drone to a larger drone and read the speed of the four propellers to control the speed of larger propellers on the host drone.

So you could use the existing radio and mems system and basically mirror the output on a larger drone.

The propellers are 4 blades and the maximum RPM is 49,000. Using a laser diode and receiver on each propeller I calculate about 3us pulses.

Is there a uv diode receiver or any light receiver that could keep up with this pulse rate?

Any ideas on monitoring the blade speeds?

It’s just a wild thought at the moment.

Not sure about UV receiver, but you can get an IR photodiode with 6ns response time for 31 cents.

That works great. Looks like 29,400 RPM is about maximum speed of the rotation.

I better stop doing math in my head, I initially was thinking 3us between pulses.
