I admit that I am getting old, crotchety and set in my ways., but I simply cannot cope with the bewildering range of ARM-based processors.
To me, there is *too* much choice in that area and a high risk that the model that suits my application today will not be available in 3 years time, hence requiring rework of hardware and software.
(quite a few of my past projects are supposed to have a 10+ year working life)

Yes, There is an irony that MCUs like the 8051, have outlived some of the ARM cores claimed to replace it....

If you think choosing a long-term ARM is tricky, try selecting a Bluetooth module !

Microchip Technology Thailand will be the third assembly site for UC3A1 and UC3C1 (TQFP-100) as of Nov'18.

SAM4L may be an alternate to UC3 as it's also in the affected parts list for this PCN.

So the ol' UC3 isn't quite dead yet if they are readying a third assembly site.  smiley  It looks like the UC3 has deeper market penetration than the naysayers here would have you believe. cheeky

It has often been opined that the only reason the UC3 lives on at all is because Atmel (and, thus, now  Microchip) have a few very large customers - probably automotive.

 

So any "catalogue" sales are just small fry - a by-product.

 

Also, Atmel based their touch controllers on the AVR32.

 

But it's all still just "maintenance" - no development.

This is just the first page of 5 that comes up when searching Digikey for "AT32UC3."  Somebody must be buying a lot of these "dead" chips for them to keep re-stocking like this.

Just playing devil's advocate but how do you know they are "re-stocking"? Those numbers could be a bunch of reels in a dusty box at the back of a warehouse that have been sitting there for the last 8 years because they over-estimated what the likely demand was going to be. I think the only way you could gauge the rate of sales would be to repeatedly check those figures and see how quickly they go down (until the point where they would then trigger a restock).

I don't have the historical evidence to prove it but I was quite surprised when I saw the current stock levels yesterday.  I don't recall Digikey ever having more than 1000 pieces of any variant of the UC3 family.

Surely you could just ask Digikey, Mouser, ...

 

I am always terrified by the apparent stock levels of obsolete devices at Distributors.

If a popular memory chip has a pin-compatible cheaper, better replacement,   the old device will stay on the shelf.

 

If an obsolete MCU has no pin-compatible replacement,  there might be a scarcity value.    Buyers do not want to change inventory or seek new approvals.

 

This could mean that Digikey has shelves full of DIP parts that no one wants to buy.

Or they think that an EOL device might end up with an inflated scarcity value.    And buy up Microchip's stock cheaply.

 

The business model for a Distributor that matches supply and demand for fast moving products is good.

A Distributor with money tied up in obsolete stock is not so good.

Don't forget what caused the revival of this thread.  Mchip just brought a third site online for manufacturing these parts.  Who in their right mind would expand their manufacturing capability if the parts were not selling?

Obsolete by EOL or obsolete by OBE?

Only some UC3 are EOL (likely models that couldn't meet a production rate requirement)

UC3 revision 3 (UC3C, UC3L, circa '09) FlashVaultTM (Secure State) has a recent alternative in Armv8-M TrustZone.

True though with growth in 32b MCU there will be pressure on package and test sites.

That PCN may exist for risk reduction.

 

wafer fab :

One alternative to UC3 is some SAM; another is PIC32 MX.

Searched for PIC32MX in Microchip PCN then on 'die' and 'wafer'.

Microchip may not have a wafer fab for PIC32MX; TSMC may wafer fab some PIC32MX.

The Olimex link below is unrelated to Atmel / UC3 but seems relevant nontheless.

Short story:

Olimex sells small Linux boards (& other stuff) and some of their boards is based around a now obsolete design (Alwinner A10), which was originallly designed for consumer level tablets.

Alwinner says it will restart it's production line for Olimex alone if Olimex buys 50k units and will have a lead time of 90 days.

... just means that MPLAB does not support UC3 devices... Atmel Studio looks at the atmel server, MPLAB looks at the microchip server. There's no 'most recent instance' between the two...

or a way to keep UC3 alive as EDBG is relatively low volume.

FlashVaultTM (UC3C, UC3L) is a feature that would be of use for touch screen software and likewise for automotive applications.

5V IO (UC3C) may have more of an automotive use case (CMOS noise margin is proportional to supply voltage)

AVR32 is a very good product, we are designing a meter with AT32UC3C0512, 5V power supply, other brands can not replace.
