Edit: Please see post further down as well for more detail.

Hi

I've a new default install of Atmel Studio 7.0 installed from a full download of as-installer-7.0.2397-full.exe

The system is a rock-solid un-messed-with, fully patched, Windows 10 Pro version 2004 system, OS build # 19041.329 with the Windows Feature Experience Pack 120.2202.130.0

AS 7 installs cleanly, but will not start - on clicking, I get the splash screen, then the screen goes white with the hourglass, then the white disappears (app has terminated).

Bit of a loss as where to go now - rather irritating. All my other dev environments (MSP430/ESP32/PIC/Xilinx etc.) are fine. I do have MS VB 2010 Express, MS VC# 2010 Express, MS VC++ 2010 Express, MS VS 2005 Express installed. There is a bunch of other stuff, mostly National Instruments GPIB, some HP stuff

I just faced the same task. Fresh installation @ fresh Win10Home-2004.

No problems starting the program!

I used the offline installer (874 MB).

installed from a full download

I just updated my laptop to Win10 pro, also no problem. I installed it from the web installer instead which is the recommended mode.

May have to wait for the Studio guru to pop in, or may try a full uninstall and reinstall.

I would make sure that there are no windows updates pending, and run https://atmel-studio.s3-us-west-... and see if it finds something to repair (given that the crash happens in C:\WINDOWS\assembly\NativeImages_v4.0.30319_32\Presentatio5ae0f00f#\8681b49f8f2e3fb6d7848aef17e4fb1f\PresentationFramework.ni.dll which is part of .NET)

More on this - I'm pretty convinced that this is a Windows 10, v2004 vs. Atmel Studio compatibility issue. The faulting module is part of .NET 4.8.4180.0 which was updated as part of the 2004 update - see attached

NB. I've tried both the off- and on-line installers - no difference. I've removed all old copies of everything from the system, including all the old .NET and VisualStudio installations, and updated most other frameworks to the latest versions. Very cathartic.

However, even after all that, there is absolutely no change to the behaviour of AtmelStudio.exe.

There are no Windows Updates pending (it's checked every day) and .NET has not been a layered product for some time - .NET 4 onwards is part of Windows... - again, see attached.

This is the AppCrash event log entry (WER file added as attachment too - there was no .DMP, only a .WER):

Thanks to those that responded with their own experiences - unfortunately none were for the Win 10 Pro 2004 +  AtmelStudio 7.0.2397 combination which I am referring to...

This is a show-stopper for us at the moment and it'd be really good if someone from Atmel who understands the IDE could chip in. Every other app is just fine, including the MASSIVE Xilinx Vivado HLS, Eclipse variants (used by ESP32 & TI MSP430/432 CCS), Arduino, MPLAB etc. etc.

The error is immutable, i.e. it's always the same and is thus a "solid fault". If Atmel would like other diagnostics, I can easily provide whatever is required.

Or, is there somewhere else more appropriate to ask about this?

Edit: Just opened a support case on this.

If you want support, then you need to open a support case... I think that's at  https://microchipsupport.force.com/s/  (you'll find it under Design Support at microchip.com)

(And as a reference, I do not have this error running Studio on Windows 10 2004...)

Weird! Our posts crossed - I have just opened a case ( 00528873 ) so hoping for some movement on this.

Are you running the same version of Atmel Studio, i.e.  7.0.2397 and the same version of .NET 4?

I run more .NET versions than I care to admit...

Did you try to do a repair of .NET with the link I provided above?

I ran it, but it doesn't do anything as the version I have installed is later than the tool supports.

I too have a lot of .NET versions, but only those the tools use - I listed those via a PowerShell script, the output of which is an attachment in one of the above posts.

I have run Microsoft's recommended .NET repair tool that does support 4.8 and later, from  https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=30135

Quote:
This tool troubleshoots common issues with the setup of Microsoft .NET Framework or with updates to Microsoft .NET Framework setup installation. Additionally, this tool tries to resolve these issues by applying known fixes or by repairing the installed product.

Thanks to those who made suggestions...

Bogdan from Microchip Support may have fixed this - see  https://microchipsupport.force.com/s/article/Atmel-Studio-7-crashes---Unable-to-launch-Atmel-Studio---Debugging-steps

Following every step of the procedure in the KB article and then uninstalling AtmelStudio, rebooting and re-installing seems to have sorted the issue. The next few days will decide...

It's not clear what the root cause was, except that it wasn't the anti-virus s/w I use.

Not completely fixed... I now get the busy message that others have reported, plus any attempt to install extension updates crashes with a missing entry point. A missing entry point is most certainly a solid fault.

Very frustrating. There have been several uninstall/install cycles of both VS and AS and the issue is now being escalated.

OK - I uninstalled AS 7 and everything to do with Visual Studio including the 2019 Community Edition I use for C++ Windows development. Rebooted, then re-installed AS 7 from as-installer-7.0.2397-web.exe without installing any Visual Studio components first.

As if by magic, extension updates now work, but I'm still getting the "Waiting for an operation to complete" message. And, no, I don't have a Cherry keyboard, so that's not the problem. Nor is a USB conflict (that's been checked too).

I have to say, although I really appreciate the support from Microchip, this application has given me more grief and wasted more time than pretty much anything I can think of in the last 10 years - no other app comes anywhere near it. I use a whole load of development tools from other manufacturers with no issues whatsoever. The system is rock-solid stable with clean error logs and is fully up-to-date with all MS patches and application s/w versions.

No application should be this sensitive to its environment. There are a fair few people having problems - my last remaining one is pretty common too - there are several threads on that, none with a resolution unless you are using a Cherry programmable keyboard (I'm not) or are prepared to build either a clean 10 system (not practicable for us) or to install on Windows 7 (now out of support from MS).

I'm now concerned about re-installing VS 2019 community edition in case I break AS 7 and waste yet more time. It just shouldn't be this way.

Perhaps isolate one or other in a VM?

That is indeed the obvious route - I was just having a whinge really about why was any of this necessary? I must have wasted at least a full day, possibly more, on getting this installed and almost working. More irritatingly, it's been about 2 weeks elapsed. Life is too short.

Glad to read that as others have issues with Windows 10 2004.

Windows 7 ESU is available at a reasonable price.

Windows 8.1 EOS is somewhat in the future.

Windows 8.1 is the most reliable Windows; Windows 10 as the most secure Windows.

A virtual machine for Visual Studio is an end-run.

Windows 10X will eventually containerize Win32 applications.

Microsoft plans for single-screen Windows 10X rollout in spring 2021; dual-screen in spring 2022 | ZDNet

Microsoft might change the cadence of its Windows 10 feature rollouts starting next year in order to help prioritize Windows 10X development.

I'm hearing Microsoft hasn't given up on running Win32 apps in containers on 10X, but likely not until 2022 at the earliest.

10X support for 32 bit apps sounds very like a standard microkernel container implementation viz. Docker & friends. I use microkernel & microservice tools on a lot of other projects on Linux - not needed it on Windows yet.

Microkernels are nothing new - it makes sense for MS to use them for legacy support.
