I have updated VS 2015, I have applied all updates to AS 7, running x64 on Windows 8.1 - constantly, constantly crashing. Sometimes every 5 minutes, almost guaranteed to crash when closing a debug session. Totally unpredictable, I feel like I'm hitting save more than I'm doing actual work for fear of losing my work.

I know this is supposed to be avr related only, but the board I'm working with right now is SAM-V71 XULT. However, it crashes with my XMEGA, D21, and other boards as well. In studio documentation it states that EDBG will crash occasionally with V71, so I disabled the CMSIS-DAP on the board and am trying to debug using my J-link Plus. Still crashes so saying EDBG is the reason it's crashing is malarkey. I disconnect the tool, restart (the computer, the software, etc...) and even with no tool connected it crashes at will.  The automatic restart doesn't allow me to capture any failure information. Someone suggested running as admin, that didn't help.

Every time I start I get the warning shown in the attached image. Any suggestions on how to get around this or people who have experienced similar issues?

*Edit : I also added the activity log - there are some errors throughout it but this is definitely out of my league.

I applied an update of VS studio through windows which put me at Update 3.  I applied repairs to AS 7 through windows add/remove programs, which deleted some of my extensions like asf 3.32, and then reinstalled the extensions through studio and I'm about three and a half hours without a crash which is a record for the last 11 months. Still sticking with my j-link as EDBG doesn't seem reliable in lining up the instruction with the symbols.

You're mistaken.

Return of the smack?

Return of the Mac?

EDBG :

There are alternatives to Atmel Studio but will lose some features; one of several features lost is DGI.

Windows App-V is in Windows 10 Enterprise; App-V virtualizes Win32 applications.

Atmel Studio 7 has a 32-bit instance.

Vagrant (a development environment builder) can operate with Hyper-V.

There is one Vagrant box that contains an instance of Windows 8.1 Enterprise evaluation.

This may ease trial of Hyper-V.

Do you have any extensions installed explicitly by you from gallery\extension manager other than ASF? [Extensions which extend the behavior of the editor??]

Things like code folding also aren't available to me which I thought was kind of a standard part of the IDE....

According to "Extensions and Updates" here is what I have installed : some of them probably not relevant to the question you're asking but I figured I would throw it out there :

-Atmel Gallery (for version 7)

-Atmel Kits

-Atmel Software Framework (3.32.00xx)

-GdbConsole

-LiveWatch

-MS Advertising SDK for Windows 8.1

-MS Advertising SDK for Windows Phone 8.1 XAML

-Percepio Trace

-Terminal

-Visual Assist for AS

-VS Extensions for Windows Library for JavaScript

I also had this problem with continual crashing "maybe caused by extension" - probably once a day. I never got to the bottom of it, highly frustrating. On a different PC, it works ok, but I don't think I installed any extensions on either system.

The only time it now crashes is if I forget that I'm in debug mode and move something.

Not using EDBG and using my j-link plus has also drastically reduced the number of crashes. Not using EDBG causes other issues with the SAMV71 board though - when the EDBG times out, it pulls the i2c lines connected between the CODEC and V71 permanently low and the codec no longer responds to commands. Have to physically unplug and replug the board in constantly. Hitting reset doesn't do anything for EDBG MCU apparently and it's extremely annoying. I tried still connecting the EDBG to terminal to keep it "active" but this doesn't seem to help. Separate issue...

I also get constant crashes while debugging. It's really irritating.

Anyone managed to resolve this issue? I'm having the same problem with a project that I have made using the "Create project from Arduino Sketch".
