The fine RCA plug & jack has been around for 60+ years...you can still use those cables & not need 20 different types/sizes of "RCA" cables

USB & HDMI have been around for far less time...Every time I stock up on cables, I find 2 years later they no longer works since some other brand new shape or size is needed. So more cables and adapters are bought, until soon they are no good & must be changed to something else. I smell a fat rat!

Agreed. Blame Apple and their insatiable appetite for sales.

Funnily enough, with the new generation of macbooks, Apple changed the power connector to USB3 rather than the magic magnetic one previously. I rather like the magic magnetic one.

My Surface laptops have them....and while they are mighty handy and convenient, They are a huge pain in the ass in my industrial sites where there's a lot of steel/iron cuttings about.  The 'dust' sticks and shorts out the connectors...need a wooden(unused) toothpick to clean it all out carefully.

The USB3 connector SUCKS IMO.  It feels really flimsy and not very sturdy.

I rather like the mini USB connector best as it was small, but durable.

Remember when RS232 cables were such a ... crap shoot?  How many wires actually present, how many pins connected (3 to 26!), gender of connectors, null-modem or straight-through, whether there were "local" wiring in the connectors, ...

I'm so glad that USB fixed all that.

You know, except for the cables with USB-C on one side and USB-A of some sort on the other side.  Could be a fully passive power cable, could be a 5GB USB 3.1 cable.  Who knows!
